Fun ideas from Mrs Reynolds!
Hello everyone,
Hope you are finding lots of ways to have fun at home and in this lovely sunshine! Mrs Reynolds has shared some photos of great ideas she has been using with Erin at home:
TRANSIENT ART
An old cutlery tray filled with interesting objects like stones and cones and an old picture frame can be used outside to create many different patterns and pictures.
Below are some examples of outdoor Transient Art by the British environmental artist Andy Goldworthy. You might get some ideas from him…
DIFFERENT WAYS WITH A PADDLING POOL
1) Use it as a Wee Den to draw and read in
2) Erin’s Daddy’s birthday balloons were collected to make a place for dolls and teddies to have a party
3) RHYME FISHING:
Another idea is Rhyme Fishing in a paddling pool, an old baby bath or a washing up bowl. Fill it with water and throw in some rhyming objects (e.g. cork -fork; key-pea; petal-metal), then challenge your child to fish out the objects that rhyme using a ladle or other utensil. For an extra challenge you could work on a way to make your own fishing net…
Calling all Artists and Nature Detectives!
Hello to all the children from Busby Nursery! We hope you have been having fun playing, learning, creating and exploring at home.
Have you seen any signs of Spring through your window?
Any birds building nests or looking for food?
Any leaves starting to grow on bare trees?
Any new Spring Flowers?
The famous artist David Hockney, who is 83, was busy drawing some beautiful daffodils on his iPad last week. Here is his picture:
Here is another huge painting he once did of trees in the Spring. It is the size of a whole room. Do you like the colours?
Why not try looking for some signs of Spring through your window or on your daily walk. You could keep a notebook of them.
Lots of children have been drawing and painting beautiful rainbows and putting them in their windows. Perhaps you could also try painting some Spring flowers or trees to celebrate Spring. You could try using an iPad like Hockney if your family has one, or you could do it with pens, pencils, coloured paper or anything else you can think of. Let’s make a Spring Gallery. You can share your pictures on Busby Primary and ELCC Twitter.
Super Science
The children have been busy investigating and discovering through lots of exciting Science Experiments during STEM fortnight. They have been testing, describing, asking questions and observing results.
“I’m wondering what would happen if…”
Saving the Planet
As part of STEM fortnight, the children have been reading Greta and the Giants (the story of Greta Thunberg). In the Story Box they explored which animals are endangered through habitat destruction and made their own signs to say “Stop”, “Help” and “Save Our Planet.”
The children created a frieze from the story – making a forest, drawing the giants, people and houses, and writing signs.
“I want to make a Stop sign.” EH
“We’ve drawn the giants.” EP
“This is all the houses.” FD
“That says Help.” SF
The giants “smashed the trees… I drew all the people – the big people and the little people.” LM
“Litter” (is dangerous for sea turtles) MF
“Did you know that in China they are chopping down the bamboo that pandas need to eat?” IMM
“Orangutan! That’s King Louis. What do they do in the trees?” EH
Check Out Our Moves
The children have been very busy and active in gym, working their hearts, muscles and imaginations in Creative Movement. They have been moving it to Jazz music, Swing, Salsa and Techno!

They also like to move it outdoors and in the MUGA, where they have been developing their core strength, jumping, balancing and ball skills.
We are Poets, and We Know It!
The children have been enjoying exploring rhyme through fabulous books like “Oi Frog” & “You Can’t Let an Elephant…”, alongside Rhyme bags, Story props and Rhyme Fishing in the Water Tray. They have taken great delight in generating their own rhymes, inspired by the books, and have come up with some great rhyming lines!
“Miss MacFarlane sits on a darling.”(EK)
“A rocket sits on a docket”(EH)
“A giraffe sits on a path.” (NN)
“Never let a bee come to tea.” (IMM)
“Don’t give a scare to a bear!” (EP)
“Don’t give a coat to a goat.” (MN)
“Don’t let a bear sit on your chair… or your hair” (FD)
“Don’t let a bunny eat your money.” (EC)
“That’s not a song because it’s just words. A poem is a thing that rhymes.” (HN)
“Honey… and money.” |
“Pig rhymes with wig!” “The wig is too… BIG!” |
Bring on Spring!
The children have been learning all about how things grow, as we look forward to Spring and also our Spring Event next Thursday morning, March 5th.
“Put a seed in, water it and wait till the sun comes.”
“One of my iris bulbs turned into a white flower.
The other one was yellow.”
“The bulb is round.”
“It has roots.”
“Mine has grown big.”
Singing “Ten Little Daffodils” and imitating how they grow.
Heart Bakers
Our master bakers have been busy mixing, kneading, rolling, cutting, scooping and squeezing to make their Heart Biscuits on Valentine’s Day.

“A heart means you love your family.”
ADVENTURES WITH HEARTS
– sharing, comparing, naming the colours, counting, feeling, describing, what are they made of?
“This one’s made out of paper and this one’s made out of wool.”
”These are the same kind. Is this pink glitter?”
“I like this one. What is it made out of?… That’s wood, and that’s paper.”
”There’s a heart inside you – that’s the one you’re talking about…”
The Year of the Rat
We have been celebrating and learning about Chinese New Year in lots of different ways:
Acting out the story of the Great Race;
Taking part in a Chinese Dragon Parade;
Tasting noodles, stir-fried vegetables & prawn crackers;
Making paper dragons, lanterns, dragon frieze and lucky red envelopes;
Hearing all about Chinese New Year from Ivy’s Mum
