Into Civil Engineering

Funding for young people in further and higher education in Scotland Would you like financial support to study civil engineering? Why not apply for an ICE Scotland grant? Applications are invited from young people applying for a college or university course in civil engineering commencing September/October 2021 Up to six awards of £4,500 per year are given to young people aged 21 and under, living and studying in Scotland Each successful candidate will receive £4,500 per year for a maximum period of four years Awards will be given in two equal £2,250 instalments in August and December The civil engineering qualification studied must be an ICE accredited course – for example: NC, HNC, HND, BSc, BEng, or MEng. Find out more: www.ice.org.uk/coursesearch Recipients of the award will be expected to commit to a future professional engineering qualification such as EngTech MICE, IEng MICE or CEng MICE. ICE administer both the Scottish Into Civil Engineering awards as well as the UK-wide QUEST Undergraduate and Technician Scholarships. ICE will only pay one award to any individual student so although you may apply for both, you will have to select the one which you prefer to receive on offer. Application Deadline The closing date for entry in 2021 is Wednesday 31 March 2021. How to apply Complete an application form including the name of the college or university course in civil engineering to which you have applied. Application forms are available via email from lynn.dow@ice.org.uk Selection timetable During April 2021 a shortlist will be prepared listing those candidates to be interviewed. At that time a reference will be sought from a referee not related to you. Interviews for the award will take place in early June and the successful candidates will be notified of their award no later than 30th June 2021. All successful candidates will be required to provide written confirmation from the relevant university or college that they have been accepted or enrolled. Award conditions Recipients of an award must complete a short annual report form for each year of study they complete, listing their academic results for that year of study. The continuation of payments is dependent on satisfactory progress through the course chosen. On completion of the course, a copy of their academic qualification is to be provided. Recipients who leave their course before completion must notify ICE Scotland with immediate effect. Award recipients will be required to become student members of ICE at the start of their course and participate in activities to promote civil engineering and encourage awareness for civil engineering amongst young people. Medic Mentor National Medical Essay and Art Competitions

Medic Mentor are inviting secondary school students from all years and schools to apply to the Medic Mentor National Medical Essay and Art Competitions. We encourage students with an interest in becoming doctors, vets and dentists to apply because not only is it a fantastic achievement for their CVs, but submissions can also be used to fulfil criteria for the Medical Awards Programme.  Therefore, it puts students one step closer to being awarded a scholarship of £12,000 to study medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine at university. Nuffield Research Placements 2021 – Online applications are open The Nuffield Research Placement Scheme is aimed at the current 5th year pupils who will be sitting their Highers in 2020 and who are studying any Science, Technology, Engineering and/or Maths (STEM) and Social Science/Humanities subjects at that level. The placements help increase confidence and improve key skills including practical, communication, report-writing and presentation skills. Placements also provide students with excellent experiences & skills to include on CV’s and personal statements. By working with professional scientists and engineers in a real-life environment, the students gain an invaluable insight into a wide variety of careers. This is a wonderful opportunity for your students and we hope you will promote the scheme to them. The scheme, now managed by STEM Learning, aims to widen access, focusing on economic and social deprivation, and have found that students who come from lower income families, or whose parents have not attended higher education, benefit most from the scheme. In light of this, the scheme is now only open to these students (and priorities are placed on students eligible for the bursary). This means the charitable funding is targeted where it will have the greatest benefit. In 2020 although we did not have face-to-face placements we did still offer all students who had successfully applied virtual/online projects with supervisors and complimented these with research skills building modules (62 students in Scotland successfully completed projects). This year we are going for a blended approach and we are hoping to have face-to-face projects where possible (2-3 weeks, possibly staggered over a longer period), or if needed again virtual/online projects only, where government guidance and individual institutions and organisations policies permit or restrict. In collaboration with the charity You Can be a Doctor and a number of other organisations we are hosting an online information evening for pupils in S1-3 and their parents who are thinking about studying medicine or simply interested in finding out more about the career: An Introduction to Medicine The event is to be held on Tuesday December 15th. 7-9pm. This would be Scottish specific and cover what civil engineering is and where it fits into the world, different routes into the profession – foundation/modern/graduate apprenticeships, full and part-time study and scholarships.
