Institution of Civil Engineers – Careers Talks plus Webinars (16-18 yrs)

Please see details below of webinar sessions and careers talks organised by ICE. The organisation is offering careers talks for senior pupils to anyone who wants one, as an introduction. This would be Scottish specific and cover what civil engineering is and where it fits into the world, different routes into the profession – foundation/modern/graduate apprenticeships, full and part-time study and scholarships. This could be live via a Microsoft Teams meeting or through a pre-recorded video, whichever format is easiest to work with. Please see Pastoral if interested. Warehouse Warrior Volunteer Location: If you like to stay in shape and help save the planet, volunteering in one of our local furniture store warehouses could be the answer you’re looking for.  We need helpful people to keep our stock moving from the vans to the warehouse and shop floor, and from the shop floor back to the van for delivery when items are sold. This role can be physical but it’s not just moving furniture around. You will be the first point of contact for customers who call our store, helping them with any enquiries, arranging collections for donations and explaining our Gift Aid scheme. Glasgow Clyde College Open Day and Modern Apprenticeship Event – Wednesday 4th March 2020 Apprenticeship Week 2020 Glasgow Clyde College would like to invite students to their next Open Day and Modern Apprenticeship Event. The event will be formatted as a careers fair attended by over 25 employers and training providers offering Modern Apprenticeship, employment and training opportunities across a number of industries as well as all college faculties providing course information and application support  for Glasgow Clyde College courses. This is a one-day event open to the general public so parents and guardians are more than welcome to attend. The event will take place on Wednesday 29th January at 12 noon in Langside Theatre, Glasgow Clyde College. There will be a light lunch, and time for neworking.  There will also be information on the range of courses that is currently offered by the School of Media and Performing Arts, which include journalism, media, television, sound production, dance, acting and performance, music and stringed instrument making. S5 pupils: Sutton Trust Summer Schools, 5th – 10th July

In Partnership with the Sutton Trust, University of Glasgow offers a week-long residential summer school aimed at high school students in their penultimate year of study. Successful applicants from around the UK will attend lectures and seminars, take part in stimulating activities around campus, and explore the city of Glasgow with their fellow scholars. Students will be introduced to the variety of academic areas that can be studied at university in Scotland.  Additionally, all students complete an online Academic Skills module designed to prepare for the transition to Higher Education.  Completion of this module will be taken into consideration upon application to the university and can form part of an adjusted offer of entry. Applications are now open and details of how to apply can be found here. The deadline to apply is midday on Tuesday 3rd March. You will require a reference from your Pastoral teacher (deadline 6th March).  You must inform them and provide at least 1 week’s notice.

Engineering the Future for Girls – Monday 8 – Friday 12 June 2020

Strathclyde University is offering a 1-week Summer School for S3 girls (entering S4 in June). Engineering the Future for Girls is being delivered in collaboration with BP and BAM Nuttall and is designed to engage girls in a wide range of engineering challenges that will inspire them to become the next generation of engineers. The summer school is fully-funded by BP and BAM Nuttall and all student costs, including a contribution towards travel, will be covered. Strathclyde will accept applications from girls with any range of subject choices at National 5. The summer school is non-residential and therefore pupils should be able to make their way each day to the Strathclyde University Campus in the heart of Glasgow City Centre. For the pupils’ convenience, we have arranged for Mentors to accompany pupils from and to Queen Street train station, Glasgow Central train station and Buchanan Bus Station at the start and end of each day.  Pupils should apply using the online application form available on our website: www.strath.ac.uk/engineering/outreach/engineeringthefutureforgirls  The deadline for applications is Monday 25 November 2019 and pupils will be sent a confirmation email upon receipt of their application. The selection panel will meet in January 2020 and all applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application by Friday 31 January 2020.  In the application form, pupils are asked to supply the name and contact details for a teacher who can provide a statement in support of their application. Teachers will receive an automated email which will include a designated link to the online application in order to submit their statement. Senior Phase School Pupils Event for Parents/Carers – How you can help your Young Person

SDS would like to invite you to an event for the parents and carers of S4, S5 and S6 pupils at: Barrhead Foundry Tuesday 29 October between 5pm and 8pm. The event is an opportunity for you to find out more about the work that we do with school pupils and how we support them to develop Career Management Skills. We recognise also that you are a key influencer on your young person’s decision making. There will be speakers on number of topics to help you to support them with their career plans. The short talks will be presented at various intervals so that you can attend whichever ones suit best.
