STEM

Primary 4a had their first trip of the term to the STEM room this week. They worked in small groups to make predictions, carry out experiments and record their conclusions. The aim was to inflate a balloon by creating a chemical reaction using lemon water, baking soda and water. Have a look at their pictures below to see how they got on!

Check out what 3c have been doing!

Science Centre

Primary 3c have had a really busy last few weeks with different outings around our Local area and a trip to the Science Centre. Have a look at the pictures below. First of all we went into the Planetarium and learned all about Space, the constellations and the planets. Then we got a chance to explore each different floor of the Science Centre. Here were some of our favourite parts:

Sophie said: “My favourite part was the Planetarium because I liked seeing Space.”

Eesa said: “I liked the Planetarium because of the stars and I liked seeing the different animals which were in the shapes of the stars.”

Lewis said: “My favourite part was the upside down house. It was a house that you went into and it made you feel all funny and dizzy because it was upside down”.

Celeste said: “I liked the games especially the Multi-tasking game where you had to press the green buttons as soon as they changed colour. It was quite hard because you had to concentrate on lots of different things.”

Coding

We have been using lots of different digital technology this week! We have been coding using beebots and probots. Have a look at our pictures below:

We have also been using a coding programme on the Chromebooks which we have loved! We are becoming so good at it. Here are some of the things we enjoyed about it.

Isabella said: “I like being able to try and get the beebot to a destination.”

Gabriel M said “I like the games you can play when coding”.

Martha said ” I like using electronics to learn.”

Ellie said ” I enjoy using lots of different shapes with the probots. I had to try a few times before I worked out how to do it.”

Seonaidh said: “I thought the Beebots were really fun and they taught us how to independently find the treasure on the map by programming the beebot.”

PE and French

Today in PE we took our learning outdoors and made the most of the nice weather. We combined PE and French and played games using French instruction.

P3a have been Coding Robots.

Today we were lucky enough to have a Mrs Skivington come in and tell us all about how to code mini robots using special coloured pens and how thermal cameras work.

She showed us how the robots respond to special pens on paper. We started by connecting the missing spaces on the paper to allow our robots to travel.

We then watched how the robots moved on top of our lines. After a few tries we designed our own robot route.

We Also had a go at using a thermal camera. It was great!!

Thank you so much Mrs Skivington.

Our Local Area Study

Library Visit

Last week we spent Thursday afternoon exploring our local area.  We walked to Giffnock library and explored it as an interesting place in our community.

It was a beautiful afternoon and everyone really enjoyed themselves. We learned about different ways we could use our local library.  We then chose a book each and took it back to school to read.

“I liked seeing the old newspapers, in the library, because they were from a long time ago.  This was cool! I liked being able to chose my own book.”  –  Will

“I liked seeing all the books in their order. I also liked seeing the big machine and what it was used for.  I liked having some quiet time to look at all the different types of books.”   – Holly

Traffic Survey

Last week, we spent some time observing the traffic outside our school.  We made some predictions about the types of traffic there would be.  We then made a survey grid with the different types of transport.  Using tally marks, we recorded how many cars, buses, bicycles, vans and lorries we saw.

We were shocked to see a lot of cars and not one single bicycle.

“We were trying to see how many vehicles we could spot.  We saw lots of cars and a couple of buses.  We didn’t see any bicycles.  I thought this activity was lots of fun because we had to use our maths skills too and I quite like maths.”   – Cara

“We spotted cars, vans, buses and lorries.  We didn’t see any bikes or even people walking.  I liked spotting all the cars moving.  I liked doing this activity outside because it was different and fun.”   – Conor

Science – Germs & Diseases

We started a new topic in science.  Last week, we did some brainstorming about what common diseases are.  We did some pictures of what kinds of diseases we know about.

We are going to be finding out about the symptoms of some common diseases caused by germs. We will discuss how their are spread and we will explore some methods of preventing and treating them.

“We were doing pictures about some diseases and their effects on humans.  We knew about the flu, the cold and chicken pox.  I liked drawing the wee person in the middle and writing some of the diseases we knew.”  –  Cameron

“We were writing the diseases that we have had and talking about how germs caused them.  I liked colouring the poster to make it look nice and then drawing the germs.”   – Leo

Creative Talents

We have been very proud this term of our flourishing talents.

Joe worked very hard to create a pencil case with many different, impressive components.  Well done Joe.

Elsa and Penny worked hard together writing a poem.  They selected the subject themselves and created three wonderful rhyming verses.  Well done girls.

Science Centre Trip – Tuesday 5th June

Related image

Next week, we are going on a school trip to the Science Centre in Glasgow.

Can everyone please be reminded that all pupils must wear their school uniform.  This is so they can be easily identified as there will be lots of other school children there.

Everyone needs to bring a small bag for their packed lunch and water bottle.

NO money is required as there will not be an opportunity to spend it.

Thank you.

Digital Technology Week

P3c were lucky enough to learn about how people use technology in the wider environment. We used ozbots which were mini robots. We designed pathways for the ozbot to follow.

Local Area Topic

As part of of our Local Area topic, we have been enjoying the outdoors and conducting a traffic survey of the different vehicles which pass our school. We then created this information into graphs.

Library Visit

We walked to Giffnock Library and were lucky enough to find out about the different ways we can use the library and each selected a book to take back to class. We found out about the history of the library and had a look through some books about the history of the local area.

 Science Centre Trip

A reminder that we will be going to Glasgow Science Centre next Tuesday (5th June). Children can bring a packed lunch if they wish or order a baguette from the school which we will bring with us.

P3b enjoy the sunny weather!

P3b have been very busy this week. We took full of advantage of the good weather today and got outside.

PE – Tennis

Today, we worked on controlling a tennis racket.  We used backhand and forehand stroke movements.  We used tennis rackets, bean bags, tennis balls and hula hoops to practise our control and hitting skills.

Outdoor Learning – Literacy

In the outdoor classroom, we used chalk to practise our spelling words.  We challenged ourselves to put the words into a sentence.  We then gave each word or sentence a value and calculated the total at the end.

HWB – Gardening

P3b have really enjoyed the opportunity to do some planting.  They have planted onions and they are really looking forward to planting some more.

Well done P3b. Keep up all the hard work!
