Miss Gavin & Mr McKay

Poetree

Primary 5A enjoyed using their Technology and Literacy skills to create poems about trees. We looked for inspiration using all of our senses and worked as a group to record them with chalk, mud ink or by spontaneous performance!

Farm to Fork

Primary 5a have been learning about sustainability. We researched food seasonality and the process of making bread and eating strawberries – from farm to fork!

Leading Our Learning!

Leo: On the first few days of Primary 5, we knew we had an important job to do. Our classroom was under construction. We started of looking at some designs and deciding what we like and what we donā€™t like, we looked at our current furniture and also new ideas.

Elsa: After that Mrs McGrotty and Mrs O Conor came to talk to us and we spoke about how we were shaping the way we were going to learn by being more flexible in our learning and taking leadership of it.

Cian: They said that they wanted us to work on ideas for our classroom, using the great ideas we had already came up with.

Rachel: For a whole afternoon we worked on ideas for design and what furniture we want. We identified different learning zones and the type of learning or activities that would take place in each zone.

Leo: On Friday morning we went around in our tables and started to think about ideas and created huge mind maps filled with lots of exciting stuff. We used laptops too to look at some architects ideas.

Elsa: This afternoon we got into groups and drew ideas of what we wanted our classroom to look like in the specific zones, we checked back at all our ideas from the morning and picked the things we thought were most practical.

Cian: After we finished our ideas we moved on to our models and started to make the things we liked.

Rachel: Finally, we worked together as a class and started to write on the window, sketching out and deciding what our classroom was going to look like with the different learning zones.

Morrison Construction

Primary 4a had a visit from Morrison Construction today. They were set a Lego challenge to build the highest tower in the least amount of time with the least amount of bricks. The challenge proved harder than they expected with the teams having to communicate their ideas effectively. This gave the pupils another opportunity to explore the STEM skills required for possible future careers.

ā€œI didnā€™t think I would enjoy this but I actually did.ā€ Mia

ā€We used teamwork and problem solving skills. We also had to measure our towers.ā€ Adam

ā€I enjoyed the challenge because we got to use Lego and we had to use our measuring skills.ā€ Iniyah

ā€It was very challenging because we needed to work together to make the most money by building the tallest tower.ā€ Matthew.

Enterprise Project

Primary four have chosen to do an enterprise project for their current social studies topic. They have been learning about the different roles required to run a successful business and have now set up their own businesses in class. Today they had a visit from Distinction Health and Beauty owner, Katie, to discuss what skills and qualities you need to run a business. The confidently interviewed her and then with her help they wrote a business plan for their own ideas on how to raise money for charity. Watch this space for more updates on our businesses.

World Book Day

Primary 4a had a great time on World Book Day. They took part in lots of reading activities and challenges throughout the day including a readathon with the other primary four pupils. They confidently shared information about their favourite books and costumes. Have a look at some of our pictures from the day.Ā

Musical Mischief Makers

One thing that we absolutely love in Primary 4c is MUSIC! We have lots of talented musicians in our class – and we’re learning new instruments all the time.

Before Christmas – some of our star performers brought in their instruments and played for us.

Murray kept us cheerful with his fantastic accordion tunes.Ā  His Dad is an amazing musician as well – so Murray wants to keep playing and get better and better all the time, so that one day HE is just as good as his Dad!

Celeste gave us some beautiful Christmas melodies on her violin.Ā  Ā She gets lessons outside of school too, but was very happy to bring her instrument in and let everyone have a listen.

Finally – Darragh brought in his tin whistle and soon had everyone on their feet clapping, with his excellent effort.

Keep watching to see what MORE musical melodies will be coming out of Primary 4c in the future!
