P4’s Local Area Topic

Primary 4c have been conducting lots of online research about our Local Areas.  As a class, we decided to create informative books which tell others a little bit about the areas they come from.  We split into groups, and each group was in charge of a different area!

We are creating books about:

  • Thornliebank
  • Clarkston
  • Giffnock
  • Williamwood
  • Netherlee

First we have researched all of the information.  Then we are laying it out clearly and creatively on all of the different pages of our books.  We’ve had to practise our drawing skills, and sometimes double check the facts using a few different websites and sources.  It’s definitely a challenge, but we’re learning a lot!

Stay tuned to see the finished results!

Autumn

Primary 4a have been exploring the season of autumn this week and developing skills across the curriculum. Have a look at some of the work we have been doing.

We explored some autumn pictures using the VR headsets. We discussed what we could see with our peers and used the scenes as a stimulus for creating our own autumn pictures using different textures.

Lastly, we applied all our ideas to writing and wrote our own acrostic poems!

Scotland Street School

Primary 4b have been learning about Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Social Studies. This week we went on a trip to Scotland Street School Museum.

In the morning we met the Head Master; he was very strict! We went on a tour of some of the museum and learned about what life would have been like for children when the school first opened. Boys and girls played separately and even took different lessons! The girls would learn how to cook, clean and look after a home, whilst the boys learned woodwork and other skills to prepare them for the world of work.

We made the bed, including new pillow cases and sheets – we promise to do our own at home from now on!

Polishing the brass was a job for the girls.
Laying the table and preparing food was a job for the girls.
In lessons, no one dared to move. If you misbehaved you would be given the belt!
Here we are learning how to bake, we thought that this would an enjoyable lesson but the Head Master told us that because of the stoves, it would have been hot, uncomfortable and dangerous!
Here we are polishing the shoes for the men of the house!
Here we are doing our drill. The boys and girls would usually do this separately.
We had a lot of dishes to wash and dry!

The irons were very heavy. Girls would have done this for 3 hours a day at school!

In the afternoon we took part in a workshop called Shapes of Mackintosh which was great fun! We loved being in a building that Charles Rennie Mackintosh had designed and enjoyed looking at all of the hidden shapes and symbols.

We created shapes with our bodies.
In groups we created larger shapes together. This group created a star!
We created a pentagon!
We created a cone!
Another star!
We also created a star!

At the end of our workshop we created our own pieces of artwork by printing and painting.
We went outside to look for different shapes around the building. We learned about the shapes that Mackintosh used to represent different things. The Mackintosh Squares in the background are a thistle!
We created a sphere!

Take a look at what P3b have been doing!

Our Local Area Study

Library Visit

Last week we spent Thursday afternoon exploring our local area.  We walked to Giffnock library and explored it as an interesting place in our community.

It was a beautiful afternoon and everyone really enjoyed themselves. We learned about different ways we could use our local library.  We then chose a book each and took it back to school to read.

“I liked seeing the old newspapers, in the library, because they were from a long time ago.  This was cool! I liked being able to chose my own book.”  –  Will

“I liked seeing all the books in their order. I also liked seeing the big machine and what it was used for.  I liked having some quiet time to look at all the different types of books.”   – Holly

Traffic Survey

Last week, we spent some time observing the traffic outside our school.  We made some predictions about the types of traffic there would be.  We then made a survey grid with the different types of transport.  Using tally marks, we recorded how many cars, buses, bicycles, vans and lorries we saw.

We were shocked to see a lot of cars and not one single bicycle.

“We were trying to see how many vehicles we could spot.  We saw lots of cars and a couple of buses.  We didn’t see any bicycles.  I thought this activity was lots of fun because we had to use our maths skills too and I quite like maths.”   – Cara

“We spotted cars, vans, buses and lorries.  We didn’t see any bikes or even people walking.  I liked spotting all the cars moving.  I liked doing this activity outside because it was different and fun.”   – Conor

Science – Germs & Diseases

We started a new topic in science.  Last week, we did some brainstorming about what common diseases are.  We did some pictures of what kinds of diseases we know about.

We are going to be finding out about the symptoms of some common diseases caused by germs. We will discuss how their are spread and we will explore some methods of preventing and treating them.

“We were doing pictures about some diseases and their effects on humans.  We knew about the flu, the cold and chicken pox.  I liked drawing the wee person in the middle and writing some of the diseases we knew.”  –  Cameron

“We were writing the diseases that we have had and talking about how germs caused them.  I liked colouring the poster to make it look nice and then drawing the germs.”   – Leo

Creative Talents

We have been very proud this term of our flourishing talents.

Joe worked very hard to create a pencil case with many different, impressive components.  Well done Joe.

Elsa and Penny worked hard together writing a poem.  They selected the subject themselves and created three wonderful rhyming verses.  Well done girls.

Science Centre Trip – Tuesday 5th June

Related image

Next week, we are going on a school trip to the Science Centre in Glasgow.

Can everyone please be reminded that all pupils must wear their school uniform.  This is so they can be easily identified as there will be lots of other school children there.

Everyone needs to bring a small bag for their packed lunch and water bottle.

NO money is required as there will not be an opportunity to spend it.

Thank you.

P3b Present their research projects!

Primary 3b have been very busy! Last term they learned all about The Celts.

As part of their homework research task they selected an aspect of Celtic life in the past and by using historical evidence, they produced some amazing pieces of evidence.

Some boys and girls choose to make Power Points about Celtic food, homes, weapons and even Law and order in Celtic times.  Some of them made models of swords, shields and roundhouses.  Others made fact files and posters.  The pupils very much enjoyed showing off their projects and worked very hard on their presenting skills.

They loved comparing aspects of Celtic life to modern day life and contributing to many discussions around this.  They found out some amazing facts and really enjoyed sharing them with the class.

P3b have done some wonderfully impressive research and investigation and they have really learned from one another’s presentations.

Well done P3b, very impressive work.

Designing Magnetic Games

Check out P3d’s Blog. Over the last number of weeks P3d have been investigating forces on magnetic and non-magnetic items. We worked together in small groups at a variety of Stations to learn about magnets.

From there we progressed to designing magnetic games. We had to decide on what type of game we wanted to create and then decide on the materials that would be needed. We wrote out instructions so that other groups would know how to play our games.

We are really pleased with our finished games!

Primary 3c

Have a look below at what Primary 3c have been working on in class this week.

The Celts

As part of our Celts topic, children have been learning about different aspects of Celtic life. We combined art, technology and social studies through designing Celtic jewellery with clay! We moulded it into the shape we wanted and then created designs with a pencil. Next week we will paint our Celtic jewellery!

PE

We have been enjoying developing our teamwork skills during PE and today were playing a game called Diamond Football. Have a look below:

Artwork:

We have now completed our Steven Brown inspired artwork using a range of different medias. Have a look at our wonderful work that is now displayed on our art wall in class:

Writing:

This week we have been learning how to write a comic strip. We focused on using exciting adjectives and using pictures and words which would make it interesting for our reader. We presented our comic strip to the class. Have a look at some of our star writers work this week which is displayed on our writing wall of fame:

Reminder:

A friendly reminder that next Thursday Celts projects are due in to class. We will begin presenting these to the class on Friday. We are super impressed with what we have seen so far. Thank you!
