European Days of Languages

We had so much fun on Tuesday celebrating the European Day of Languages (EDL). We made posters to take to the assembly which showed everyone how to say ‘friend’ in lots of different European languages.

Ellie M – “I really enjoyed making the posters.”

Taylor – “It made me learn lots of new countries that I had never heard of before.”

Sophie – “It helped me learn lots of new flags. We all looked really good when we dressed up as the flags.”

Emily – “I loved the movie Mrs Allen made for the assembly it was so funny.”

We loved singing our French song ‘on encrit sur les murs’ in the lead up to the assembly. Thank you to Mrs Allen for introducing us to it, we even sang it at the disco!

We also used ipads  to scan QR codes which were hidden around the school to complete an EDL quiz.

Ryan – “I liked using the ipads to complete the quiz.”

Amber – “I think it’s good we are learning to use QR codes because you can use them out of school too.”

Wojiciech also used the ipads to listen to Polish radio and was thoroughly enjoying translating it for his fellow classmates.

He is also very proud of his work with Mrs Murray. On Wednesday he managed to spell over 100 words correctly. Well done!

We all loved the Sponsored Bounce today! We had great fun bouncing around whilst raising money for the school funds. Thank you so much for all your kind donations and sponsorship we have collected so far. If you have forms at home please don’t hesitate to bring them in on Monday.

Maths Week!

This week was Scottish Maths Week we have been so busy in class and have been doing lots of activities based around maths. We have loved completing lots of maths challenges and realising how important maths is in our daily lives.

On Monday we discussed how important maths is and we listed all the jobs we need maths for. Some examples we found were teacher, shop assistant, engineer, architect and carpet fitter. We all decided that no matter what job we get when we are older we will need to use our numeracy and maths skills like telling the time otherwise we’ might sleep in and miss our shift. Now we wouldn’t want that!

We also learnt about budgeting and we were introduced to words like ‘income’ and ‘expenditure’. We recognised that we have lots of expenditure and need to budget properly to decide what we need because it is different to what we want.

Tuesday was really fun! We used our understanding of budgeting to plan a movie. We worked in groups to pick a set, actors, an advertising package and props but we only had a budget of £800.

Ellie B – “A budget is like a limit you can’t go over.”

Ryan – “We only had £800 to pick everything. We used a calculator to double check we didn’t go over our limit.”

Amber – “My group only had £10 left over so we could use that to buy snacks or something.”

Jay F – “We picked Naomi Watts because she was cheaper if she worked with Mr Bean. We need to spend the smallest amount of money.”

Wojciech – “We bought more caravans because we had money left in the budget.”

On Wednesday we drew lots of vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines on paper then we coloured them in and used our pictures to identify shapes, angles and patterns in our designs.

Kyle – “My picture has over 600 triangles.”

On Thursday we revisited budgets and tried to research if we could feed a family of four and stick to the budget of £10 (which we found was very generous).

Ellie and Iris forgot they needed to feed four people and went back to buy more ingredients. Some pupils found that prices varied depending on whether you were making it from scratch or using a ready meal.

Today we loved the Fraction Fiesta led by the primary sevens. We all had a fantastic time playing catchphrase, fraction relays and even finding fractions of smarties!

P4/5 – “Thank you P7 it was great!”

Throughout the week we have used various technology in school and at home to play SumDog and participate in the Maths Week competition with schools across the country. Miss MacAskill has been so pleased with their dedication and accuracy when completing these tasks and games. We all worked so hard and finished 87th on the leaderboard out of over 4600 schools. WoohooWe are all so proud and loved using Sumdog to practise our maths.

Reebops!

During science we have been learning about inheritance. In class and at home we have explored our genetics and found out how similar we are to our parents. We have been looking at inherited and acquired traits.

Amy – “We were learning about inheritance and our genes. We were learning about this because everybody is different in different ways.”

Alexander – “We were not learning about the jeans you wear on your legs but about the genes that our bodies are made from!”

Taylor – “I am more similar to my dad because I have the same eye colour and we can both roll our tongues.”

Corey – “Even though I look like my dad we don’t like the same things. He is much older than me so he knows and likes different music to me. Favourite music is down to your environment so it’s an acquired trait.”

In class we made ‘Reebop’ creatures to explore genetics more and work out how and why we aren’t all the same. We watched a video about DNA and found out what chromosomes are. Then we created our own chromosomes and matched them with a partner to give us the genetic code for our ‘reebops’. We used this table below to show us what the genetic code meant.

Campbell – “When we were making our Reebops we wrote capital or lower case letters and matched them up with a partner to make chromosomes which we used to make our Reebops.”

Ben and Isabella – “We used playdoh, drawing pins, straws, hama beads, pipe cleaners and cardboard to make our Reebop creatures.”

Ellie B – “We had lots of fun making them.”

Beth – “The Reebops were very fun to make!”

Sophie – “Everybody has 23 pairs of chromosomes but our Reebops only had 7.”

Ross – “Please check them out!”
