Sumdog!

Our hard work has paid off… our class came 5th in the East Renfrewshire Schools’ SumDog competition. 191 schools competed and we came 5th overall. “We are all so proud and it was really good fun! Especially when Miss MacAskill opened the house.” -Beth

Planting!

We worked with Jackie our school gardener to check on the progress of all our vegetables. We had planted some cabbages and onions a few weeks ago and we were so excited to see how much they had grown.

This week we also planted some fennel, chocolate mint and salvia! We can’t wait to continue watching them go through the germination process.

Colourful Tulip Experiment

“We created an experiment to show how the water travels up the stem of a plant and keeps the plant alive.” – Campbell

“We added food colouring to the water and this helped us see how the water moves.” – Beth

“It was really interesting that the tulips changed colour and they looked really pretty.” – Sophie

Plants

We have started our new IDL context all about plants. We have noted what we want to know, what we already know and how we want to learn to help start us off on our learning journey.

We revised the basic parts of a plant then learnt about the inside parts of plants by looking at pictures and watching a video. After that we dissected some lilies to look closely at the different parts of a plant.

We now know that there are male and female parts of the plant and can now name and identify the different parts. Some of the things we learnt about were called the stamen, carpel, anther.”

Sport Relief!

On Friday we had a brilliant day learning about Sport Relief and where the money we raise goes to. We also learnt a lot about the European Championships which are happening in Glasgow in August.

“We played some games from the Paralympics which is the olympics for people who have a disability or special needs.” – Ellie. “We played Botcha and goal ball where the ball had a bell in it and we had to listen carefully because we couldn’t see.” – Taylor

Sharing our Learning

Thank you very much to everyone who attended our open afternoon. We had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed showing you all our learning and we hope you all enjoyed the chocolate tasting!

World Book Day

Sophie – “We all dressed up this week for World Book Day and everyone was wearing exciting, interesting, entertaining and fun costumes.”

Our School Trip!

On Friday we had an amazing time at the Battle of Bannockburn visitor centre.

We learnt a lot of new information about the Scottish Wars of Independence and also got to recreate our own battle where Scotland won!

Please come along to our open afternoon on  Wednesday 7th March at 2.30pm to see more photos of our trip and to see what else we have been learning about.

Internet Safety Day

We want to say a huge well done to Miss McCaskie’s class who had a great assembly on Friday. They taught us a lot about how to be safe online and their quiz reminded us about different tips we can use to stay safe.

Today we were using Yammer and practicing how to be safe online. It is a private online community set up by Miss MacAskill and we are going to practise using it to talk to each other.

We need to log onto glow and then go onto our launch pad to access it.” – Taylor.

“We all commented on Miss MacAskill’s post to tell her our favourite subject at school.” – Sam.

Snow!

Last week we thoroughly enjoyed the snow! Despite finding it difficult to get to school once we were here we had great fun playing and building things outside.

‘Team work makes the dream work.’

Happy New Year!

In P4/5 we really hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year. We are really excited to be back at school and looking forward to developing our learning in 2018.

We have been focusing on word problems within numeracy and maths recently and working hard to identify what the problem is asking us to do then completing it.
Alexander – “We all looked for key words to show us what kind of calculation we need to solve.” Beth – “altogether means add” and Aiden told us that “finding the difference means take away.” Ross – “sometimes altogether can mean multiplication you just need to look at the other words in the problem too.” Ellie M – “share between means we have to divide.” Kyle – “I really like completing word problems because we need to use our understanding to solve more difficult calculations.”

Moreover, within our IDL topic we have been learning about ‘Scottish Wars of Independence’. We now know about lots of important figures and their role within the war during the 13th century.

Kyle – “We learnt about the Battle of Stirling Bridge. This was when the Scottish army fought against the English army. It was very unfair because the Scottish army only had about 8,000 infantry but England had about 17,000!” “There was a big difference in the Calvary too because Scotland had 150 but England had 750 which is more than triple!” – Emily.
Campbell – “We watched a really good video to help us learn more about this battle. The video was made by someone using Lego so it was funny to watch too.
Amy – “The bridge broke during the battle and it meant that lots of the English soldiers had to try and swim back to safety in the River Forth. Fortunately Scotland won even though we didn’t have many soldiers.
Iris – “William Wallace was named a hero because Scotland won!” Alexander – “They called him the Guardian of Scotland.”
