Outdoor Day March 21st

Today we took full advantage of the lovely sunny weather and spent most of the day outside.

Here we are all reading together,  we chose books from the library and set up an outdoor classroom.

Normally we start a Monday morning with out phonics work, therefore we took part in our phonics activity outside.  We create phonics flowers on paper plates.

Following our STEM week focus on Growth we read a story all about the life cycle of a frog.  We then created our own life cycle diagrams on our paper plates.

As part of our maths work we have been working on data handling.  We created tables showing our results using sticks, leaves or stones.  Together as a whole class we created a table showing our favourite chocolate.  Our choices were Dairy Milk, Chocolate Buttons or Freddos.  Chocolate buttons won!

In the afternoon we carried out out Health and Well being Circle Time on the pitch in the sunshine.   We chatted about friendship, feelings and being aware of the feelings of others in different situations.

Busy Elves working in the Kitchen!

On Monday we designed our Christmas baubles, on Tuesday we baked them and on Wednesday we painted them!

We made our decorations from salt dough.  We enjoyed creating a mixture of 2 cups of plain flour, 1 cup of salt and 1 cup of water, getting our hands all sticky and covered in dough was the best part!

It turns out that we have some expert bakers in 2.8 who could show Mary Berry how to ‘knead the dough’!

Working in the kitchen with approximately 25ish Primary 2’s is a very different experience from working at home in your own kitchen with your family.  Everyone worked well together sharing equipment, taking turns and working as a team!

Well Done everyone! This was our last visit to the kitchen for our Mearns Masters block – Gastronomours!  We hope you enjoyed it!

Soup, glorious soup!

Today we made Leek and Potato Soup (with carrots as Mrs James thought that we might not like green soup!)

We were able to use our cutting skills to chop potatoes, carrots and celery.  We had some assistance with the onions and leeks.  Together with our partners we filled our bowls with chopped vegetables that we then placed in the pots.  Stock cubes and a little salt was added to the water.

After lunch we went back to the kitchen and we could smell our delicious soup as we walked along the corridor to the kitchen.  Mrs James and her super duper assistant (one of our wonderful PSA’S) had cooked the soup during lunch time.

It was then blended and poured into our containers.

Our job was not finished yet…we still had our dishes and washing up to do.  Here is the proof that we know how important it is to keep everything clean and tidy in the kitchen where food is prepared.

Finally, we wrote out an ingredients list to go home with our soup!

Snapshot

Here is a snapshot from this week.  We have been investigating Autumn leaves, acorns and conkers in the tough tray, trying to use these loose parts to make pictures and symmetrical patterns.

We used small pumpkins to work on our fine motor skills using elastic bands.  This then helps use with our handwriting.

We used natural letter slices to make words as well as some of our new wooden magnetic letters.

This week a few soft toy patients arrived at our doctor’s surgery which required our doctor’s to write prescriptions for the medicine that they need so that they feel better.

Here is a photo of some of us working at the teaching table.  We were carrying out a writing task related to our focus on COP26.
