Nick Butterworth – Author Focus

We thoroughly enjoyed finding out more about Julia Donaldson and reading her wonderful stories.

Having a space in our room to focus on Authors and Illustrators helps to develop our reading, writing and thinking skills. Through exposure to different Authors and Illustrators, we hope to build a deeper attachment to books and establish a room filled with readers.

We are moving on to cleberating the work of Nick Butterworth:

Dinosaurs!

As part of our planning the children told us that they would like to learn all about dinosaurs. To support their learning we have set up some new activities!

Number

The wind made it tricky to do maths outside today so instead we went on a journey to the treehouse. There we worked on:

Counting

The number before

Sequencing numbers

Hopefully we can take our learning outdoors later as we love learning in nature.

Storytelling

In P1.1 we love creating and telling stories and today we had fun trying something new!  We used the Story Board game to create our stories. By choosing cards that showed different aspects of a story we had to think on our feet to create stories that make sense.

This is one of the stories that we started:

When I was happy I went to the beach and saw a lizard. Suddenly it turned dark! By Sali

There are lots of budding authors in P1.1.

Blending

We are having so much fun learning our sounds in Primary 1. Each sound has a story, song and action and these help us to remember our sounds.

We are also learning to blend our sounds together to help us read and write words. Sometimes we self correct by revealing the picture.

Learning to Add

We have been learning how to add in class this week! First we started by revisiting our numbers, making them out of cubes on our ten frames, writing them on our white boards and creating subitising patterns.

Then we used different cube colours to show our calculations on our ten frames and wrote the calculations on our white boards.

Finally we began recording our calculations in our jotters!

We have been really enjoying addition and using a variety of tools to help us learn.
