As part of the Glasgow Science Festival P5 children in East Renfrewshire were asked to take part in Creating Engineers: K’nex Challenge 2017.
The children were given K’nex materials and opportunities to experiment with with the rods and connectors to look at the most effective designs to build a strong bridge and simple machine pulleys.
For the classroom heat the children were asked to design and build a bridge which can span across 2 desks and have a way of opening to allow boats to pass under. The bridge needed to be able to support the weight of a small bottle of water without collapsing and open to allow any size of boat through.
The children had to follow certain specifications and discuss, plan and draw their design with their partner.
Here are some of the finished bridges –
The class winners were Jake, Jed and Amy and they will represent Calderwood Lodge in the cluster final in Mearns Primary School. Well done!
