ACTIVE EXPRESSION

activexpression

Active Expressions are a bit like phones but they are much greater than phones!  We can use them in maths lessons for mental maths  and lots of other things.   We can do multiple choice quizzes,  write answers in words or type in  numbers  for answers.  We have our own Active Expressions with a number on the back so we know which one is ours.  Once we have answered each question the teacher can quickly see who has got it right by looking at a bar graph on the computer.

The P.5 Weather Report!

This week we completed the water cycle in Science.  As the final experiment we did an AWESOME one! We made our own mini water cycle models.  Our experiment was putting a plastic ice – cream  cup full of water into a plastic zip folder.  We drew the water cycle on the outside of the folder and hung the folders on the window frames.  The next day we checked to see if anything had happened.  Sure enough, some of the water had evaporated in to a gas, then changed back into water as condensation. The condensation then created precipitation and ran down the inside of the folder and made a little puddle of water. This is called accumulation. We will check again after the weekend to see if all the water has evaporated from the little cup.

It’s going to be a crazy weekend of wet weather with Storm Abigail! We may even see lots of different types of precipitation – rain, hail, sleet and snow! Hold on to your umbrellas everyone!

This week’s news!

This  week  we  have been learning  about  precipitation in Science.  There are four  different  types  of  precipitation. They are rain, sleet,  hail snow.

In  art  we  drew  self  portraits.   After we  drew  our  self  portraits   they   were  sent   off   to   be   turned  into   tea towels.   We have also been doing painting based on Monet’s famous Lilly pad painting. He was a famous French impressionist painter.  Our paintings are not finished yet but we’ll post pictures of them when they are done!

The Water Cycle

In science this week we have been learning about condensation. Condensation is the process when water vapour cools down and turns back into a liquid. To find out more about this we did an experiment. We put hot water in a beaker and then we put cling-film on top of the beaker. Then we put ice on top of the beaker.  As the steam from the hot water rose upwards it got cooled down by the ice.  This then made it turn back into little drops of water.  This is called condensation.

Succot Celebrations!

Succot Assembly

This week we celebrated  Succot and it was our turn to do the Succot assembly. We did a play about rain coming into the Succah.  It was very fun and we enjoyed doing it. Our family and friends were invited.

Going Into The Succah

All the classes got to go into the Succah.  On Thursday we got to go into it. We got juice and a biscuit and we sang lots of songs. It was a lovely sunny day and it was very nice to go in.

Rights Respecting Play

A theatre company called Hopscotch came to perform a show that taught us about our rights. The show was very funny and we laughed at all the funny parts. It was full of good songs that taught us about SHANARRI.

Running T-shirt Competition and Water

Last week, Primary 5 did a competition to design pictures for the T-shirts that the teachers and parents will wear at the 10km race. Some people did silhouettes and some people did drawings. Ben’s mum is seeing whose picture is going to go on the T-shirt.

2 weeks ago, we started a water topic in science. We learned that in Asia there is a desert that will eventually in 100,000 years turn into an ocean. We figured out that water can be a solid, gas and liquid. Also we did an experiment with a kettle.

Edinburgh Book Festival

barryEdinburgh Book Festival

On Tuesday 1st September Primaries 3, 5 and 7 went to the Edinburgh Book Festival. When we got there Primary 3 saw the first author while primaries 5 and 7 were having their break.  After break we all got to go to the bookshop.  In the bookshop there were lots of books, even some CDs.  Most people bought a book.

Next we got to meet the author. His name was Barry Hutchison.  He told us about three different books that he has written.  ‘The Shark Headed Bear Thing’, ‘The Swivel Eyed Ogre Thing’ and ‘The Moon Faced Ghoul Thing’ (which is coming out at Halloween).

He likes to write scary, funny, monster fiction books.  He told us a little bit about himself when he was a little boy.  Can you believe he is scared of squirrels!?  As part of the workshop we had to create a monster.  Barry asked us what features we would like the monster to have and then he drew them.  We decided to give it a crocodile face, wasp eyes and a squirrel body and tail.

It was a great day and we felt very lucky. The best bit of the whole day was getting to see Barry Hutchison.

D D Everest
D D Everest

On the 27th of August P.5 went to Giffnock Library. We met D.D. Everest. He is a father to two teenagers and he has two cats. In his spare time he coaches a football team.

D.D. Everest has written a book called ‘Archie Greene and the Magician’s Secret’. The story is about a 12 year old orphan boy called Archie Greene. He gets a package on his twelfth birthday and in it there is a book. He cannot read it because it is all written in different languages. The delivery of this special book takes Archie on an adventure where bookshelves are enchanted, librarians become sorcerers and spells come to life!

Flora got an autograph from D.D. Everest and we were given the opportunity to ask him questions. Here are some of the questiArchie Greene Bookons we asked and the answers he gave:

Q. How long have you been a writer?
A. Since I was 15.

Q. Have you written any geography books?
A. No.

Q. What is the hardest part of writing a book?
A. The beginning for choosing what to do.

Q. Do you find it difficult to make time for hobbies and all the other things you need to do?
A. Yes.

He finished his talk by showing us the mystery parcel that got delivered to Archie. We had to say what we would like to find inside the box. Louis and Zipporah got a bookmark for saying something magical that might be in the mystery box. Louis said “I wanted a magic football that can make you amazing at football’’. Zipporah said “A magical cake that can make you have super powers’’.

It was a great trip.

The Fantastic Fives

We are a small class of 17 pupils but we have big imaginations and we are super smart. In our class our table groups are based on Minecraft – The Diamond Dogs, Mighty Iron Golems & Ender Dragons. Our science topic for this term is Water and we are also learning all about Jewish Festivals. We are excited to write more blogs as we learn more about them at Blogging Bootcamp. See ya next time!!
