Water Filters

IMG_2485[1]

On Tuesday we made water filters.  A water filter is when you get dirty water and clean it. Here are the steps.

First you get a plastic bottle and cut off the bottom.  Secondly, you jam a little bit of cotton wool into the bottle neck. Next  you fill the bottle half full with sand. After that you put clean gravel on top of the sand. Then you place a beaker underneath  the bottle and pour dirty water  into the bottle.   As the water passes through the filter it comes out  much cleaner.

The P.5 Weather Report!

This week we completed the water cycle in Science.  As the final experiment we did an AWESOME one! We made our own mini water cycle models.  Our experiment was putting a plastic ice – cream  cup full of water into a plastic zip folder.  We drew the water cycle on the outside of the folder and hung the folders on the window frames.  The next day we checked to see if anything had happened.  Sure enough, some of the water had evaporated in to a gas, then changed back into water as condensation. The condensation then created precipitation and ran down the inside of the folder and made a little puddle of water. This is called accumulation. We will check again after the weekend to see if all the water has evaporated from the little cup.

It’s going to be a crazy weekend of wet weather with Storm Abigail! We may even see lots of different types of precipitation – rain, hail, sleet and snow! Hold on to your umbrellas everyone!

This week’s news!

This  week  we  have been learning  about  precipitation in Science.  There are four  different  types  of  precipitation. They are rain, sleet,  hail snow.

In  art  we  drew  self  portraits.   After we  drew  our  self  portraits   they   were  sent   off   to   be   turned  into   tea towels.   We have also been doing painting based on Monet’s famous Lilly pad painting. He was a famous French impressionist painter.  Our paintings are not finished yet but we’ll post pictures of them when they are done!

The Water Cycle

In science this week we have been learning about condensation. Condensation is the process when water vapour cools down and turns back into a liquid. To find out more about this we did an experiment. We put hot water in a beaker and then we put cling-film on top of the beaker. Then we put ice on top of the beaker.  As the steam from the hot water rose upwards it got cooled down by the ice.  This then made it turn back into little drops of water.  This is called condensation.

Running T-shirt Competition and Water

Last week, Primary 5 did a competition to design pictures for the T-shirts that the teachers and parents will wear at the 10km race. Some people did silhouettes and some people did drawings. Ben’s mum is seeing whose picture is going to go on the T-shirt.

2 weeks ago, we started a water topic in science. We learned that in Asia there is a desert that will eventually in 100,000 years turn into an ocean. We figured out that water can be a solid, gas and liquid. Also we did an experiment with a kettle.
