Last week of outdoor learning

This was our last week of outdoor learning this session! So we went big! We got out all the construction materials and made bridges and pathways to connect together 6 pallets the P7s had set out for us!

We measured our construction using a really long tape measure. It was 12m wide and 27m long!

After all that building we were pretty tired so we had a sit down…

And then a lie down!!!

Must be time for the summer holidays soon! Have lots of outdoor fun!

Measuring the playground and building rockets!

P1 have been measuring things out in the playground! Miss Crook only asked us to find things longer and short than a metre, but we decided to measure lots of things in centimetres as well!

“This is almost the same as a metre. The stick is a tiny bit longer.”
“The red circle is shorter than a metre and the orange circle is longer than a metre.”
“It’s 17 metres. No! Centimetres!”
“Our stick is 24 centimetres.”
“It’s longer than a metre.”

Then we built a space ship that was 4 metres long! Miss Crook only gave us 2 metre sticks so we had to move them and measure out the 4 metres.

Chilling in our 4m long rocket!

Measuring

This week, P1 moved onto measuring things outside!

First we all got a stick and tried to order them longest to shortest!

“We would need 5 of the longest sticks to measure Miss Crook, but 100 of the shortest sticks!”

We also made bridges and measured them using metre sticks.

The longest one was 6 metres and the shortest one was 4 metres.

Positions and directions assessment

This was P1s last week of position and direction in outdoor learning. They had to use lots of skills to complete some final challenges!

  • read the instructions in order
  • put all the resources in the right place
  • stand in the correct location
  • work together as a team!

Then they had to follow the arrows to build a bridge safely across the swamp!

Next week, they will be starting to look at measure!

Beebot directions!

Something strange happened in P1 this week. We all turned into robots!

Giving each other directions.

This week, P1 were learning how to use directional language to give each other instructions on our giant, outdoor beebot mat!

They used forwards, backward, left and right to send each other to the different pictures on the different squares.

Do you know a top tip for remembering your left and your right?

April Showers!

This week, P1 were back outside to practice their positional language and start learning some directions as well!

They built space ships and became robots!

Unfortunately, the only time it was dry enough for Miss Crook to take a photo was when we were sheltering from the very heavy April showers in the storage container!

Sheltering from the rain!

You’ll have to ask them all about how it went…

P1 Positions

We can read and follow the instructions!

The sun is waking up and starting to peek out from behind the clouds ready for P1s outdoor learning! They have been using the construction materials to explore positional language. They have worked so well with partners and used their muscles to move heavy pieces of equipment.

Can they remember how to check if a wooden plank is safe to stand on?

Can we get ‘in’ our bridges?

Last week for P4, P4/5 and P5

This week was the last week outdoors with Miss Crook for P4, 4/5 and 5. We got to build giant water runs, learnt a new strategy for a construction challenge and used watering cans and bottles for measuring volume.

Stepping stone jumping

Ask us about what the activities were and some of the skills we have developed over the last 5 weeks!

And the rain came down

This week is was very wet for all of outdoor learning. It meant we got to try out the new waterproofs for the school (they worked really well!), but also that Miss Crook didn’t take her ipad outside for photos.

Drying off

P4, P4/5 and P5 all did 3 activities:

  • Water sports: ‘Water Throw’ and ‘Water and Spoon Race’
  • ‘Match and Measure’ on the adventure trail
  • Constructing bridges and castles

Can they remember what these activities were?

Back to it!

After an exciting week of snow last week, where lots of Outdoor Learning happened in parks and streets, we were back outside at school this week!

P4, P4/5 and P5 were exploring volume, ordering containers by capacity, measuring and estimating in l and ml and using problem solving and teamwork to complete outdoor challenges!

What is the volume challenge here?!
