P3a Class Blog October 2015

Social Studies

We have started our Local Area topic by discussing what we already know and what we would like to find out about Giffnock.

Dan would like to know what the population of Giffnock is.

Hugh would like to know how many shops there are.

Molly would like to know how many children go to School in Giffnock.

The children enjoyed walking round the Local Area looking at the different styles of homes.  They also focused on how the land is used, recycling facilities available and public transport links. Finally they identified and discussed the route taken focusing on left and right turns.

‘I enjoyed the walk and discovered new places including May Terrace which is a row of terrace houses.’  Elliot

‘I liked when we passed the police station the police car put its lights on for us.’ Amir

I liked it when we passed the shops as I could see shops I mainly go to.’  Charlotte

HWB

Our focus at the moment is safety.  We are looking at the importance of having rules to keep us safe. We will be discussing what we do in an emergency and the people who can help us.

Expressive Arts

We are still focusing on developing tone and pattern using a range of materials in art.  We created lovely patterned vases using oil pastels and used bright coloured paint for the flowers to go into our vases.

I enjoyed decorating and making flowers for our vases.’ Alexander

’I liked designing the vases because I like flowers and I like painting them.’  Kate C

ICT

During ICT we have been using BBC Dance Mat to teach us how to correctly lay our fingers onto the keyboard and type efficiently.  We have really enjoyed using this resource.  We will be moving on to Beebot to link with direction in numeracy.

RME

We have been learning about The Good Samaritan through the use of role play and a visit from the Minister. We are developing a good understanding of how to be kind to others.

‘Mr Miller said The Good Samaritan is about being a good neighbour.’ Moya

‘We are learning to always be nice to people.’ Connor

P3a Class Blog September 2015

Welcome to P3a’s first class blog. We have settled well into our new classroom routines and have created a class charter.

Social Studies

We have started the year with a mini topic on how to care for our school and community.  We looked specifically at litter.  Over a week the class took part in a litter study to establish which areas of the playground have the most litter.  We made a graph of these findings and discussed ways to reduce litter.

‘I liked the litter project and designing our own bins.’ Moya

‘I enjoyed litter picking because we picked up litter and put it in bin bags.’ Alexander

‘It was good because there wasn’t a lot of litter.’ Mia

Science

We have been exploring magnets.  We are trying to discover which objects attract the magnet or repel it.  We have spent time discussing fair testing and we plan to make the primary ones a magnet game.

‘Some magnets are really strong and some are not.’ Dan

‘I liked finding out North Pole and North Pole repelled and North and South Pole attract.’  Charlotte

‘I enjoyed finding out about Magnet Man!’  Elliot.

HWB

Our focus at the moment is food and nutrition.  We are looking at the foods we like/dislike and the importance of food.  We have discovered there a 5 food groups.  We have been sorting a variety of foods in these groups.

We used words like squishy, delicious, yucky, revolting and           scrumptious to describe food we did and didn’t like.’ Kate C

‘Food helps you to grow, be active and stay healthy.’ Ewan

Expressive Arts

During art we have been developing tone and pattern using a range of materials.

‘We have been using different shades of blue to make a fish bowl.’ Molly

‘Shades of blue got lighter like a real fish bowl.  We made patterns on a fish with oil pastels and put it on a bowl like a real fish.’     James

ICT

We have been reminding ourselves of the keyboard layout and discussed some of the skills we learned in primary 2.  We have been concentrating on making graphs which has linked well with our social studies topic.

‘I like using my typing skills and Google Safe Search to know how litter can affect animals.’ Nathan

‘We put our information into Microsoft Excel to create a litter bar graph.’ Kate M

Awesome Achievers Primary 3a

We are proud to celebrate life skill achievements by dressing independently, cooking and caring for others.

Sporting achievements include golf, highland dancing, Taekwondo and football.

Successfully completing a technical challenge by building a Go-Kart and a 10k charity walk demonstrate confidence and responsibility.

April update

This term in Primary 2, we are going to be learning about Our Community. We want to find out what sort of jobs people do in our community, what services there are and what the transport is like. To do this we need to go on a walk of our local area and also have some visitors in to talk to us about the skills they use in their job.

In Science we are going to be learning about living and non-living things. So far we have sorted pictures and created questions about living things to help focus our learning.

In ICT we are going to be developing our skills using spreadsheets. We are doing Data Handling in maths and will use some of this information to create graphs on the computer!

Dream Big!

Primary 2 have had a great day during Dream Big Day. The children came dressed as the occupation they aspire to be. They enjoyed storytelling workshops about being sensible with what you earn and about being fair and honest.

The children discussed why they wanted to do specific jobs and what skills would be needed for different jobs. They then highlighted what skills they thought were their strengths.

We had a variety of occupations represented in Primary 2, such as vets, doctors, a chef, artist, teachers, dancers and several footballers. Moya dreams of being an author because she loves reading books. Dan aspires to be an archaeologist because he loves history. Elliot wants to be a scientist because he wants to make potions!

End of February update

Primary 2a have had a great fun learning about different transport with Miss Murchie. We linked this with our drama and had fun pretending to walk the plank! In our art time we created really cool 3D hot air balloon pictures using coloured circles.

In ICT we have been busy using Glow to create simple blog posts. We linked up with Primary 6 who responded to our blogs. It has been great fun being able to read their replies and send replies back to them. We also learned how to create a simple pirate animation with 2Animate.

In Science we have started to learn about our senses. We have been playing fun games to help us use our sense of hearing to identify where the noise was coming from. We also used torches to discover how the sizes of our pupils change depending on the amount the light.  We are excited to find out about the other senses too.

February Update

We’ve been having great fun learning about different modes of transport in the past. Through sorting and matching, we discovered how different modes of transport were invented and how this has influenced transport today. We used timelines to show this. “Imagine trying to cycle on a Penny Farthing.” Bicycles nowadays are much safer and easier to ride. Using our imagination, we developed unique cars of the future. With our eco-friendly hats on, our designs were created using recycled materials. A fabulous name chosen for a car of the future was ‘Candy Crush’ and a super description was ‘a sparkly car which flies super fast.’

We are looking forward to learning about the Glasgow Subway by researching and exploring maps. We chose to learn about Concorde aeroplanes because we are fascinated by how fast they can go. We will also have an exciting Pirate themed week where we will be experimenting more with maps and instructing our friends how to locate pirate treasure by giving accurate directions.

Welcome to Primary 2a

We have settled well into Primary 2. We love collecting Warm Fuzzies. The aim is get 10 warm fuzzies and then you earn a token. To earn our fuzzies we are learning to be responsible citizens by working hard, helping other people, sharing and being kind. Some of our favourite tokens so far are Furry Friend, Mr Moose and Treasure Chest.

We have started to learn about the world and have asked questions that we would like answered. With a partner, we are going to work together to research a country in the world. Information we hope to investigate is their currency, their food, their language, their flag, their weather and the best places to visit. When we have gathered our information, we need to pretend to be travel agents and present the information to the class.

In art we drew self-portraits and postcards of our holidays. Now that it is autumn, we are looking at changes outside. We went out and created colourful leaf rubbings.
