Easter Sunday
Easter Sunday:
We may well be separated by distance, but we are united spiritually. This is still the day of amazing joy. The crucified Christ is risen. The whole Church is renewed in the mercy of Jesus. We are wrapped in the tender arms of Jesus. An American priest friend of mine told me about an interview he had seen on TV of excited youngsters in New York. The interviewer asked a six year old boy, “What does the Easter bunny mean to you?” The boy replied, “Jesus died for our sins and then rose from the dead.” The stuttering reporter was taken aback and asked, “But what does that have to do with the Easter bunny?” The boy said very simply, “Nothing!” Out of the mouths of babes…… If we truly believe that death holds no true power over us, we can walk each day with courage, freedom and new life. I saw a natural history programme about Death Valley in Southern California. It’s a 140 mile long sun-parched gorge. Temperatures regularly reach 134 degrees and less than two and a half inches of rain fall a year. Any rain that falls, quickly evaporates. Several years ago in this barren wasteland, rain fell for nineteen days straight. Suddenly, the bone-dry earth came to life. Seeds dormant for years burst into bloom. That transformation of Death Valley by rain hints at the transformation Christ brings into our lives. Today is Easter Sunday. Today we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Today, Christ brings love into a love-starved world.
Let us Pray:
Risen Jesus, like your disciples we are fearful,
and so we ask you to give to us that blessing of peace,
by which you calmed their anxious hearts,
filled them with joy,
and confirmed them in faith, you who live and reign,
forever and ever.
Amen
