Motivational Speaker – David Hay
We are delighted to announce that David Hay will be coming into our school on Tuesday 11th June to give a motivational address to some of our young people in S5.
David Hay played football for club and country at the highest level. He signed for Celtic back in 1966 and as a youngster with Celtic was part of their reserve team who came to be known as the Quality Street Gang as it contained so many great players.
David Hay made his first team debut with Celtic as a substitute in a 4-1 league win over Aberdeen at Parkhead on March 6th 1968. He went on to make 230 appearances for Celtic from 1968 – 74 as part of a Celtic team famous for winning 9 league titles in a row. During his playing career he won 27 International Caps for Scotland which included being captain for a game against West Germany in 1974 and playing for Scotland in the 1974 World Cup. After the World Cup he signed for Chelsea and played with them up until his retirement due to injury.
After retiring as a player David Hay entered football management. He became manager of Motherwell in 1981 before taking the reigns at Celtic in 1983. Managing Celtic for four seasons he won the Scottish Cup in 1985 before going on to win the League in 1986 in spectacular fashion by beating St Mirren 5 v 0 in a must win game on the last day of the season.
After managing Celtic he went on to manage Lillestrom SK (where he won the Norwegian League in 1989), St Mirren, Livingstone (where he won the Scottish League Cup in 2004) and Dunfermline Athletic.
David Hay is currently working with young people at Cumbernauld College as well as writing a regular weekly column for the Evening Times.
