Young Persons’ Free Bus Travel Scheme
On 27 July, the Scottish Government announced plans to commence the new Young Persons’ Free Bus Travel Scheme from 31 January 2022.
Subject to Parliamentary approval of the necessary legislation to increase the age limit, which will be laid in draft in August, the scheme will also apply to young people resident in Scotland between the ages of 19-21 (inclusive).
Young people aged 5 – 21 will be able to access the scheme using the National Entitlement Card (NEC) or Young Scot branded NEC. However, work is ongoing to finalise the application process and advice on this will be provided on the Transport Scotland website later in the year.
The new scheme means around 930,000 young people across Scotland will benefit from free bus travel which will embed more sustainable travel behaviours from a young age and help to meet our target of net zero emissions by 2045.
Please ensure you are aware of all restrictions before travelling. Full details of the current restrictions can be found on the Scottish Government website.
