HOMILY FROM FATHER STEPHEN FOR THE 12TH SUNDAY AFTER EASTER

Even the hairs of your Head are counted.

Introduction:

Today’s readings are very apt for our current times, where people are experiencing vulnerability and tension. Yet we are being called to trust in God who knows us intimately, understands our needs, and offers boundless love. In his isolation, Jeremiah turns to the Lord to ask for help, for he needs friendship in his difficulties. The Psalm is a cry of anguish. Yet despite his distress, the psalmist has confidence in the great love of God. In the Gospel, Jesus reassures us of his loving attention amidst our fears. In our own times of trial and vulnerability, we pray for God’s understanding, healing, guidance and teaching. Being Father’s Day – we remember of our Father’s both living and dead at this Mass, and our own Bishop John Keenan.

Homily:

Today ‘s Gospel is an affirmation for all those who feel persecuted in any way because of their beliefs or because people are speaking badly about them, or those who feel alienated from their family, community or even from God.

During such times it can be extremely lonely to the point where people can lose their sense of purpose in the world. While we might not want to shout from the rooftops, as Jesus suggests, there is a message here to speak out, to talk it out.

Today – spent time on the beautiful words of Jesus in this Gospel – ‘Even the hairs of your head are all counted, so do not be afraid; you are worth more than the many sparrows!’ The sparrow, one of the smallest birds, is cared for and loved by God. This is a reminder that no matter how insignificant we might feel or how challenging the circumstances get, God is with us.

Each of us is precious. Today let’s recall the times or places where you felt God’s supporting presence.

I am also conscious of the anxieties and struggles of parishioners, family, and friends  at this time, we pray that all those who suffer may find their way in life, allowing themselves to be touched by the gentle and humble Heart of Jesus during these confusing and unpredictable days.

We pray for all affected by COVID-19 virus; for all who are sick, for the medical and auxiliary staff caring for them, for all those who have died and all who mourn their passing; and for a speedy resolution to the current pandemic. Please contact me if I can be of any help. God bless and protect you all this day. I hope  you enjoy a restful and peaceful weekend.
