Weekly Prayers

Monday 3 December 2018.

Today is the Monday of the first week of Advent which is the season of preparation for the celebration of Christmas and is a time when we look forward to the coming of the Messiah,

In the Old Testament the Prophet Isaiah foretells the birth of the Messiah.

‘For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace’.

Let us pray that the peace of Christ shines on the troubled nations of the earth.

 Vocation Prayer

Dear Father, Shine your light upon me so that I may see my true vocation. Give me the grace to hear your word and be an example to others of your love for us. Thank you for sending your son Jesus to help me follow His example. May I freely, courageously and lovingly respond.

Amen.

“There is one thing I ask of the Lord; for this I long, to dwell in the house of the Lord, all the days of my life…”

Father, all-powerful God, your eternal Word took flesh on our earth when the Virgin Mary placed her life at the service of your plan.

Lift our minds in watchful hope to hear the voice which announces his glory and open our minds to receive the Spirit who prepares us for his coming.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen

 Hail Mary…….

St Nicholas is a well-known saint yet there are a lot of facts that are still uncertain about his life, including his birth date. Saint Nicholas is called “Wonder-Worker” because of the number of miracles attributed to him. One example being, as a young man Saint Nicholas is said to have made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land travelling by sea and when a storm arose the sailors thought that they were doomed. Nicholas prayed calmly.  The wind and waves died down and they were all spared.

It is for his gift giving that perhaps St Nicholas is best known. He had a habit for secret gift giving, especially to poor children. He would put a coin in a shoe if it was left out for him. Today in countries across Europe children celebrate this day by giving each other gifts.

At this time of year it is important to remember those children who are less fortunate. We hope that the example of St Nicholas will inspire our generosity especially in our School Charity Campaign.

Tomorrow is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception which celebrates the belief of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. From the first moments of her existence she was preserved from any sin. From this, as a young girl, she had the grace to make a most important decision for humanity: she said ‘yes’ to God and became the Mother of our saviour. Therefore, today is a celebration of her holiness.

We pray for purity of heart and mind, that like Mary, we may always be available to God and fully open to his inspirations.

Hail Mary….
