Farm to Market Project – S2 Hospitality

S2 pupils worked through a design and make brief to make a chutney suitable to sell at Wholefoods market day. The investigations included visiting Wholefoods to find out about labelling and marketing, a visit to Cragie’s farm to select ingredients and a visit from Mrs Twaddle to demonstrate how to make chutney. The pupils then worked in groups to design and manufacture their chutney and enjoyed selecting ingredients which complimented the vegetables selected at the farm visit. At the end of this task they sold the chutney for £2.50 to £3.00 a jar and made £71 profit. In evaluations the pupils stated that they really enjoyed learning about ingredients and enjoyed manufacturing the chutney. The sales team enjoyed working out pricing and marketing strategies.

Halloween Cake Competition – S3 Hospitality

Pupils designed and made a celebration cake for Halloween. As part of this creative task they had to plan a design that was colourful, textured and met the Halloween theme.

  • Day 1 – pupils researched Halloween designs and planned their design.
  • Day 2 – they made the Victoria sandwich.
  • Day 3 – they brought in ingredients to decorate their cake.

The winner in Mrs Cuthbertson’s class made a graveyard scene with biscuits as gravestones and crumbled biscuits as the earth. The winner in Miss Hughes class made a pumpkin themed Halloween scene with neat lettering. The winners were chosen based on the design and appearance.
