Freescale STEM Challenge

Some of our S6 pupils attended a STEM event at Freescale Semiconductor in East Kilbride on Monday 5 October.  The challenge was to build and customise an autonomous car which would then ‘race’ cars from other schools.  The cars were judged on design, build quality, speed and tracking accuracy.  The pupils also had to complete and present research on the likely security issues associated with  real life autonomous vehicles and had the opportunity to listen to guest speaker, ethical hacker,  Ken Munroe.

Our vehicle received praise for build quality and the work that had gone into designing the body, but unfortunately an incident on the ramp, knocked the vehicle off track and we lost valuable seconds.  In the end, Strathaven Academy were worthy winners.
The pupils enjoyed the visit enormously and had the opportunity to find out more about the work carried out by engineers at Freescale and how internet enabled devices could be made more secure.
