Learning Through Work Week

Pupils in S3 are getting the chance to find out more about Modern Apprenticeships as part of a nationwide week of events organised by Skills Development Scotland. The visit will see SDS and WorkER visit the school on Tuesday 17 November to talk directly to pupils about the benefits of on-the-job formal learning, the qualifications, and to give them the chance to ask questions. Pupils will also receive a booklet about Modern Apprenticeships to bring home.

A Modern Apprenticeship is all about learning while you work – and earning at the same time. At its core, it is a job like any other. But as well as getting paid, apprentices gain loads of practical work experience as part of a highly structured training programme. At the same time, they work towards a qualification developed and recognised by industry.

Modern Apprenticeships come at four different levels of qualification, and right up to the equivalence of a degree. In the past, apprenticeships were mostly in the trades. Things have changed. Today, there are over 80 types of apprenticeships – and hundreds of jobs – covering everything from financial services to science.

There will also be information on Foundation Apprenticeships, which enable pupils in S4 to S6 to complete elements of a Modern Apprenticeship while still at school.

To find out more about apprenticeships and look for apprenticeship vacancies go to apprenticeships.scot or follow @apprentice_scot on Twitter. Pupils can also speak to their in-school careers adviser.
