Film Club Review of the Week
Congratulations to Luke Kelly in the S1/S2 Film Club who has won Review of Week for his review of The Maze Runner and has won a great prize.

In an era of teen dystopian Sci-fi films all of which are based on books it takes something truly exceptional to stand out from the crowd and leave its own distinctive mark on the genre however, I can tell you with absolute sincerity that ‘the Mazer Runner’ … is not that film. The Maze Runner is already a ubiquitous franchise with the success of the books and the films but I’m one of the people that can’t understand the success firstly, the film suffers from the problem that seemingly every modern action film has ‘shaky-cam’ which makes everything in the frame go out of focus and the viewer has difficulty seeing it. It also suffers from another problem plaguing modern action films the fact that the camera quickly cuts from people fighting and the camera is in so close that the film just uses exaggerated sound effects to convey the impact of a punch or a kick. The film’s acting doesn’t fare much better as apart from a great turn from Will Poulter as a generic antagonist of sorts to our main hero Thomas, Thomas is played by Dylan O’Brien a who has no natural charisma and can’t convey any real emotion. The film’s biggest problem is the script it has nothing in the way of natural dialogue because all things considered the characters speak to each other only to explain needlessly complicated colloquialism’s and the films ‘TWIST’ was so embarrassingly simple it would make Nancy Drew blush.
