Chinese New Year Party (25 February)

In this event, pupils and staff felt a real taste of traditional Chinese culture. They had the chance to celebrate the most important Chinese festival by participating in a wide range of Chinese activities which were educational, cultural and built on the language skills previously acquired in Chinese Mandarin lessons.

Pupils from the Chinese Lunch Club helped to plan and design the Program of Events, deciding on the Chinese graphics to be used and studying and rehearsing for a long time to ensure their performances were authentically Chinese. The pupils did a fantastic job presenting the event which gave them an opportunity to put into practice what they had learned in previous classes. The pupils were able to deepen their understanding of Chinese culture and during the process learned many new terms and vocabulary.

By holding such event pupils have the chance to use the target language of Mandarin and make progress in the learning and understanding of China and the language. It is hoped that the success of this event can be built on in future and that we can incorporate more Chinese cultural events to ensure that our Hub is the centre of learning Chinese language and culture in East Renfrewshire.

Photographs from the event can be viewed here.

Chinese Lunch (4 March)

Mrs Zhou and Mrs Docherty accompanied a group of pupils to a special classroom in Seewoo Chinese Restuarant to undertake a Mandarin lesson. This experience based learning helped the pupils to gain a better knowledge of Chinese food vocabulary, food ordering phrases in restaurants and most importantly, experience of the fascinating Chinese food culture through personal engagement which proved to be both relevant and effective.
