Can I send a personal thank you to all of you who took time to vote for the WATER WORKS project – both pupils and staff in schools across ERC.We are very conscious that 8804 votes could only have been achieved by a lot of friends helping out. Each of the other two projects achieved just over 5000 which means … WE WON!
We were informed yesterday that the ERC / Barrhead High project had won the £100K to allow the transformation of the old sewage works into a wild flower garden area. Work should commence quickly and I believe they aim to have it in place by next summer – we will let you know when it is ready for visits!
The individual messages that reached me about classes voting and seeing it on other school’s twitter sites was very encouraging – I really appreciated the support from you all.
Next week is book week. To celebrate every class in the school will be taking part in various book related activities. You can have a look at some of our plans below.
Yesterday P7 had a visit from Alison Clark from Go motorsport. She spoke about the different parts of race cars and allowed us to dress in a racing suit and sit in a real racecar!
Our Parents/Carers Evening will be held on Thursday 7th November, 3-8pm. You should have received your appointment time last week.The Book Fair will be at the school and a Fairtrade stall.
Your child will be given a chance to attend the Book Fair during class time to view and purchase books, books will also be available to buy on the evening of the 7th. You will also have a chance to purchase school uniform. It has also become tradition at Parents Evening in St Mark’s to “bring a bottle” for our Parent Council Xmas Fete. A table for collections will be set up in the school hall.
What’s the vision? This project puts some TLC into the WC. They want to transform a disused sewage works into a quirky garden. Playing on its industrial past, the site will use the huge sewage tanks as giant planters with beautiful displays of Scottish native wild flowers.
Tanks will recreate different environments such as wetland meadows. Young people will work with a retirement club, and there’ll be cycling and walking links, so young and old will work and play together.
Who’s behind it? Barrhead High School nominated this site and will drive the idea forward with the help of ‘Still Game’, a local retired people’s club, along with Green Academy students and support from the local council.
Mrs Hallan is off on a week long visit to Lyon in France to develop her French language skills and meet with other modern languages teachers to share ideas and good practice.You can follow her adventure on St Mark’s Twitter.
Reminder that our Cuuriculum afternoon will be held in the school on Tuesday 29th October 2013, this will run from 1.30pm-2.45pm. Can we ask parents and carers to assemble in the school hall at 1.30pm prior to moving on to individual classrooms. This will be an opportunity to visit your child’s class to see some work which your child has been involved in to date.
Yesterday P7 visited Eastwood Council Offices to take part in a debate. The motion proposed ‘ Technology is the future;books and jotters are history’. After a lengthy debate the majority voted in favour.
P4 and P4/5 have been learning about the Vikings. Hopscotch Theatre group presented an interactive workshop teaching them about many aspects of Viking Life.
Tomorrow is “Wear your Trainers” to school day. This is being held to raise awareness of the dreadful events happening in Syria. Any money raised is being sent off to the “Save the Children” charity. The Pastoral Council are keen to support their peers in identifying the rights and responsibilities of children and have recognised that in Syria children’s rights are not being received. They hope that the donation will help to deliver some of these rights to needy children.
