29.4.16 P2b Last week with Miss Queen

Miss Queen has been working in our class since November 2015. It is now time for her to return to University to complete her studies. She is going to be a Primary Teacher.

We have worked very hard with Miss Queen and we are really going to miss her.

This week we have continued to work on our Glasgow topic. We created fabulous TV’s and we are making wonderful PowerPoint  about our  favourite famous Glaswegian.

We have also created an excellent Glasgow themed leaflet complete with an introduction and sub- headings.

We had a very special visitor this afternoon. Mrs Grubb came to school with her twin boys Ewen and Inness. We all thought they were very cute and cuddly.

We are excited about our STV sponsored walk next Friday.  (Please remember to return consent information) Fingers crossed for the weather!!!

If you are near the route please come out and give us a wave.

Have a wonderful and happy weekend

Glasgow is Gallus – P2a and our Famous Scots

22.4.16

As part of our Glasgow Topic Primary 2a has been learning about the Burrell collection, famous Scots, specifically John Logie Baird and Alexander Graham Bell.  We learnt that Logie Baird was famous for inventing the television and that Graham Bell was famous for inventing the telephone. As part of our lesson we made our own televisions out of boxes and paper.  We used tape, scissors and teamwork to create them.  We also made telephones out of plastic cups and string.  We then talked to each other using them.

In ICT we have begun to learn how to do research using search engines on the computer.  We all found a famous Scot that we did not know before.

In language we have also been learning about Glasgow.  We learnt about William Burrell and the Burrell Collection. We took notes from a text and summarised them. Before the holidays we all gave a talk about the famous Glaswegian of our choice.

Primary 2 have really enjoyed learning about our topic, please ask us about it.

This week in ICT we have been learning how to make a database. We inserted a table into a Word document and learnt how to merge columns.  We also learned how to move words to different parts of a cell and insert the data. We have made a database with the results from our science experiments to find the properties of materials.

The Circles have been learning how to count forward and backwards between 1-100 in 10s and 1s.

The Divisions have been learning about quarter to and quarter past the hour in Time.

The Problem Solvers and Divisions have also been learning about 3D shapes. We have learnt that they have edges, vertices and faces.

The whole class has been growing an Amaryllis.  We have been measuring it in centimetres and it is now starting to bloom.  It is 69cm.

We began our new topic about Glasgow.  We had a look at the Glasgow coat of arms and we will be trying to take a photo next to one and get 5 plus points.

We have continued to learn about famous Scottish people. We have learned about John Logie Barid this week. We are looking forward to making our own TV’s next week.

In ICT we have completed our PowerPoint about spring and we are excited about creating a PowerPoint about our favourite Glaswegian over the next few weeks.

What are you most pleased with this week?

Juyrah is most pleased with her maths this week and she has been trying very hard with fractions and subtraction.

Abigial feels that her writing is improving every week.

We have all been trying very hard and we are proud of all our achievements.

What do we need more help with?

We are all able to identify something that we need a little bit more help with. We will work together to ensure we become more confident and able to meet our targets.

Football Festival Fun March 2016 P2b

We went to a football festival this week!  We were able to use all our football skills that we have learned during our P.E sessions with our football coach.

It was in Muirend and we had to go on the bus to get there. When we arrived we met lots of other Primary 2 children from schools from all around the authority. (We even saw Mrs McKim’s little boy).

There were lots of coaches and we did a big group warm up together and then we were split into groups. We played lots of football matches against other teams. It was great fun.

We did get a little bit muddy but we had an amazing time.

This week in Primary 2b

Language

In language we have been learning about summarising. We have found it tricky but we think that with more practise we will get better at this skill.

We have continued with our Personal Imaginative writing this week. We have enjoyed writing a story called “Alien Invasion”. We had to use describing words to make our stories more interesting – I am sure if you read them you will agree we have succeeded.

Maths

We have all been learning about Data and Information Handling. We enjoyed looking at the Databases that we created in ICT and extracting information from it to create our own Bar Graph.

Some of the class have been learning about Venn diagrams. Others have been focussing on tally charts and others pictograms. It has been a very active maths week in class.

ICT

We have started to create Powerpoint presentations. We had the opportunity to experiment on the computer.  We were able to change the type of slides, insert pictures, animations and create our own designs. We are going to create a PowerPoint about our famous Glaswegian soon.

Glasgow Topic

We are continuing to learn all about our city and the famous people who come from it/contributed to it. We have been studying Charles Rennie MacKintosh and writing our name using the MacKintosh font. We looked at lots of jewellery made in his designs. It has been lots of fun.

Easter

We enjoyed our Easter service this morning and we were delighted to see Rev More (especially Rachel). We are aware that this is a special time and we have been learning about this in our class.

February 2016 in P2b – Time flies when we are having so much fun!

We have been so busy since our last blog! We have not been able to find the time at all in February.

Since our last blog

We went on a trip to Glasgow Royal Concert Hall to see Celtic Connections.

Mrs McKim has introduced Double Plus Point Day every Thursday. So far we have been able to rise to the challenge and everyone has been able to get 2 plus points that day.

We have also has Parents Night. We are hopeful that you enjoyed looking at all our work. I we are sure that you will agree that we have been working hard.

What we have been learning

In maths some of us have been learning to tile using 2D shapes and we have designed our own tile pattern. Others have been learning about 3D objects. We know what faces, vertices and edges are. We have also made 3d objects from nets.

Writing

We have been learning to write formal letters. We had to pretend to apply to become an astronaut. To help us we researched the life of Time Peake and what he did to become one.

We have now moved onto personal imaginative story writing. Keeping to the theme of space we are now pretending to be an astronaut and we are going on various missions to space. Our first mission was to Mars.

“I like imaginative stories” (Chloe)

“ I liked learning things about space and Mars” (Zara)

“I know Mars is red and cold” (Ruby)

Social Studies

We are learning about Glasgow and famous Glaswegians. We have had lots of fun leaning about Glasgow words. We had to guess the meaning. We have been looking at famous Glasgow landmarks and learning the story of St. Mungo and the Glasgow coat of arms. We are looking forward to learning about famous Glaswegians. We may even ask you for some help!

ICT

We have been learning to collect information and put it onto our own database. We know the relevant language associated with data bases and we can navigate ourselves around the database.

“I enjoy learning about databases” (Kai)

“We have been finding out information about each other” (Ellis)

Science

We have been doing lots of experiments in Science. Our topic is Changing Materials. We had lots of different objects – plastic, wood, chocolate, stone, glass and metal. We wanted to see if they would change if put near flames or water.

“I thought it was cool how they changed” (Rebecca).

Have a great weekend!

New Year 2016 Primary 2b

Welcome to our first Blog in 2016. We are sorry that we have not written one in a little while. We were just so busy with learning and performing our Nativity show.

Nativity show – Mary’s knitting

We were very proud of all our hard work. If you were able to attend the show we really hoped that you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Since being back at school

January 2016 has been as busy and as fun as usual. We have enjoyed learning and we have been working so hard. We cannot believe we are halfway through Primary 2 already! Time really flies when you are having fun!

What we have been learning this week –

We have been learning about time. Mrs McKim made up a silly song to help us remember the time (ask us and we will show you)

“I have been learning about o’clock and half past” (Lois)

“We have been looking at different clocks to tell the time” (Euan)

“I know that the digital clock is different from the clock you hang on the wall” (Owen)

“Ive been learning about quarter past and quarter to. I can only do this on the clock as digital time is tricky. I will keep practising until I get it” (Rachel)

“When the big hand is at the 6 it is half past and half past on a digital clock id 30” (Orla)

Language

We are learning to write an informal letter.  So far we have written to Santa to thank him for keeping us on the good list (he told us this when he phoned our class and spoke to Mrs McKim before Christmas – that was so exciting!!) We have also written to Stevie the Alien who came to visit Crookfur when we were off on holiday. We have also had the chance to pretend that we are writing to our favourite famous person and ask them questions.

Euan wrote to Darth Vadar from Star Wars so did Matthew.

Lucas wrote to Messi and Kai wrote to Scot Brown.

Abi wrote to Katy Perry and Caitlin, Orla and Ellis wrote to Taylor Swift.

It was fun pretending that they would read our letter.

Art

We are making a collage picture based on our houses and homes topic. It is going to look very effective when it is finished.

ICT

We are creating tables and databases. We are collecting information and putting them into our table. We are experimenting with creating a table.

6.11.15 – Primary 2b we are busy bees!

This week we have been very learning and enjoying all our activities in class.

Weather Topic

We have made sun catchers. We used lots of tissue paper and created a lovely pattern. We constructed it on laminating pouches and Mrs McKim laminated them. We are hoping to compete this next week by creating borders around them. Then we are going to display them on the class window.

We have also been checking our rain gauges and recording our results. There has been some rain and we have been completing our measurement table.

Writing

We are learning to write instructions. This week we stated to write our instructions about “How to make a fruit salad” . Mrs McKim bought lots of fruit and utensils and she made a fruit salad. We then had to write what she did. We were happy to do this as we got to have a little bit of healthy fruit.

“I liked the fruit salad a lot” (Abi)

Firework Safety

It was Bonfire night this week. Mrs McKim told us the story of Guy Fawkes and the importance of staying safe during fireworks night.

“Do not go near fireworks” (Orla)

“If you handle sparklers wear gloves and hold them well back.” (Dhruv)

“You have to be 18 before you can buy fireworks” (Lucas)

“Keep animals inside because they might get hurt by a firework” (Cara)

Maths

We have been doing lots of work in maths.

Some have been learning about 3d objects and know what faces, edges and vertices are.

“3D objects are not flat. I enjoyed making my 3D model” (Dylan)

Others  have been learning place lace value and numbers to 100.

“I can count in tens to 100” (Ellis)

Some of us have been learning to use their addition skills.

“I like adding. It was good” (Jenny)
