Primary 2a and People’s Palace Trip

Hello Everyone,

Last week we had a lovely day at the People’s Palace on Glasgow Green.  We went round the museum that was all about Glasgow’s history.

We spotted many coats of arms. Our whole class fitted into a jail cell where there was a TV that told us all about life in prison. We also saw the cloths that baby’s wore when they were born in prison.

We saw what a kitchen, a bathroom and sleeping area looked like in Glasgow’s old tenement buildings.

We learnt how Glasgow coped with the second world war. There was a bomb shelter that we all went inside. We thought it would be quite scary to spend the night in there while bombs were dropping.

In the museum we also saw a very early fire alarm.  It told you to break the glass, push the knob and wait for the brigade. It was much bigger than the fire alarms we have in our school.  There was also a picture of the first fire engine in Glasgow.

We saw old telephones, Billy Connelly’s banana boots and we went to the winter Garden.  While in the Winter Garden we saw coffee plants, a lemon plant and a lime plant.

At lunchtime we went out into the outdoor gardens and sat eating in the sun.

We had a really great day at the People’s Palace.

3.6.16 P2b. Our learning this week.

Hello everyone,

We hope that you are well and enjoying this beautiful weather.

THIS WEEK WE HAVE BEEN LEARNING ABOUT –

Art – we have been designing our own Olympic mascots. We were given a design brief and we created our mascots using our knowledge of Rio and the Olympic games.  We also used our ICT skills to re-create our mascot.

Maths –

The squares are using their knowledge to link addition and subtraction.

The triangles are learning to add tens and units – we are having so much fun!

The circles have been learning about repeated addition and sharing equally.

Language –

We are learning about nouns. We know what this and and how to identify a noun. Ask us and we can tell you all about it.

We are learning how to write a personal imaginative story. This week we based our story on winning an Olympic medal. we called our story ‘Going for Gold’. We watched lots of video clips of athletes. This helped to inspire us.

We also would like to tell you about out school trip to the People’s Palace. We had a wonderful time and we saw Billy Connolly’s  big banana boots! We were able to spot lots of the Glasgow Coat of Arms and some of us loved looking at the bomb shelter and gas masks.

That is all for today. We are going outside for golden time so we can play in the lovely sunshine.

We hope you have a wonderful, happy and safe weekend! (don’t forget the sun cream!)

Love from P2b and Mrs McKim

P2a Our Topics This Week 20.5.16

In our Olympic Games topic we began to paper maché over the ring frames we made last week in art.  We are modelling the Olympic rings. It will take a few weeks to form their shape and let it dry.  We also learnt about the history of the Olympic Games. They began in Greece a very long time ago to celebrate the Greek god Zeus. The modern Olympics will be held in Rio, Brazil this summer.

In ICT we used our new search engine skills to find three facts about the Rio Olympic Games.  We then typed our facts into a word document.

This week in our science topic we learnt about our sense of sight.  We carried out some sight experiments to see why our sight is important.  One experiment we did was working in pairs, the instructor covered one eye and told their partner where to move their hand so that they could drop a counter into a cup.  Some of us managed to get it in the cup but others missed. We then learnt about the parts of the eye.  We watched each other’s pupils get smaller when we went from dark to light.  We had a lot of fun exploring sight.

Have a great weekend.

20.5.16 What we have been learning in P2b this week.

20.5.16

Hi everyone. We hope that you are well and having a wonderful week.

What we have been learning about this week.

  1.  Art – we have  been designing our own Olympic torches. We enjoyed making these and we used lots of different materials. We decorated them and we used orange paper to make the flame. We had to include the Olympic rings and Rio 2016. They look super and we are excited about bringing them home soon.

2. Maths – we have been learning about volume (litres and ml). We have been filling up lots of different containers to see how much liquid they hold. It was great (and a little messy and wet)!

Squares – continuing to learn about addition and subtraction.

Triangles –  have been learning about Tens and Units.

Circles –  have been learning about repeated addition.

3. Language

We are continuing to develop our comprehension skills .

We completed our recount writing about the Superhero walk.

In handwriting we are learning to join our letters – we are finding it very tricky but we are sure that with hard work we will manage to develop this nicely.

We are learning to work on our presentation skills.

4. ICT

Internet research about the Olympics. We are finding out about Team GB and the Rio mascots.

Thank you for taking the time to read our blog.

Have a happy and safe weekend

Riotous Rings

13.5.16

This week we started a new topic about the Olympic Games. We began in art by making a frame for the Olympic flag rings.  We learned that there are five rings of different colours.  They represent five continents. This year’s games are in Rio in South America.  We have also begun to learn about some of the sports that take place during the Olympics.

As part of our science topic we have been learning about our five senses. This week we explored our sense of hearing.  We went outside on a listening walk and had to listen for all different kinds of sounds.  Next we will explore a different sense.

Our week this week! 13.5.16

Another week in our class.

Social Studies.

This week in class we have started our new topic – The Olympics. We are going to be spending lots of time learning about the history of the games and what the games mean. We will be researching the host country of Brazil and learning about team GB and what the 2016 games will involve. We will also be looking back at London 2012 and finding out about different sports. We would welcome any input from you regarding your experience and knowledge of the games.

ICT

We used the internet to research the Olympics. We found out lots about the various sports and we know when they will start (August 5).

Language

We are now learning how to join our letters – which was tricky. We have also been working on our comprehension skills and spelling. We will also be including lots of grammar work as of next week.

We created a recount writing piece based on our Superhero walk last week.

Maths

The Triangles – have been working hard learning about fractions (halves and quarters)

The Circles  – have been working hard learning to tell the time.

The Squares – have been learning about the properties of 2d shape and numeracy work.

That is all for now!

Have a wonderful and happy weekend.

29.4.16

This week P2a have been finishing off our Glasgow Topic.  We have completed our summaries about William Burrell and the Burrell collection.  We also completed leaflets about Glasgow.  In Art we have drawn our own ‘Windows in the West’ pictures showing what would be in our own window.

In ICT we have been learning how to be safe while using the internet.  We talked about how you should not tell strangers any personal information and when you do talk to people on the computer you should be kind, do not be rude!  We also used a search engine to look up information about the elections next week.

During gym we began to learn about dance.  We are looking forward to doing more.

On Friday Mrs Grubb brought her new babies in to see us.  They are called Innes and Ewen.  They were very cute.

Finally, we had to say a very big thank you and good bye to Miss Hunter.  Friday was her last day.  We are very sad that Miss Hunter is leaving.

Super Crookfur!!!!! 6.5.15

Today we completed our Superhero walk for the STV Children’s Appeal. We walked 4 km and now we are feeling pretty tired – I think we will all need an early night tonight! The weather was great and we all dressed to impress.

Staff from STV came to record our walk and we should feature on their Appeal TV show in the near future. (fingers crossed)

The police led the walk to ensure we were safe and we waved to all the people who came out to support us. Lots of cars and lorries honked their horns and waved too.

It was super fun and super exciting and we hope that we have raised lots for money for the charity. We will keep you posted through Twitter of the amount raised.

After the walk we had a healthy snack and some juice. The Co-operative shop in Harvie Avenue donated this – THANKS SO MUCH! We look forward to their big opening on Thursday 12th May.

Thank you for your continued support. We are so proud to be part of such a fantastic school and local community!
