Cycle Friendly School

1Cross Arthurlie was awarded Cycle Friendly School status in September 2010.  The Cycle Friendly School award is nationally recognised and celebrates the continuing work of Cross Arthurlie to promote the benefits of cycling.

We encourage pupils to cycle to school when they can and provide facilities for pupils and staff to store their bikes safely on the premises.  We hold regular Cycle to School Days and participate in events such as The Big Pedal.

Cycle training is the best way to boost your confidence when cycling and confident cyclists are safe cyclists. Bikeability Scotland is the modern day cycling proficiency, designed to give the next generation of cyclists all the skills they need to tackle modern roads. At Cross Arthurlie there is a strong focus on the development of the Bikeability programme.

We were excited to receive an award for Star Performing School in the 2014-2015 Bikeability Level 2 training. We were commended for our commitment to delivering a thorough training programme which sets high standards for the children. Our excellent team work was also recognised. Our team includes teaching and support staff from the school, and dedicated group of parent volunteers who attend weekly sessions with the pupils.

We were also asked to be part of a short film to support East Renfrewshire’s Cosla award application in 2015. East Renfrewshire was awarded a Special Award in recognition of its provision of cycle training across schools.

There are three levels of Bikeability training:

Bikeability Scotland Level 1 teaches the basic skills of riding a bike, bike balance, control, and making turns. This takes place in the playground or another traffic-free environment.

Bikeability Scotland Level 2 teaches pupils how to ride safely on the road and how to tackle basic junctions. This takes place on quiet roads that have been risk assessed by a qualified Cycle Trainer.

Bikeability Scotland Level 3 teaches pupils how to ride more complex junctions and to plan journeys effectively. This takes place on-road, on a route risk assessed by a qualified Cycle Trainer.
