Ready, Steady, Cook!

This afternoon we held a Ready, Steady, Cook! event to celebrate winning the first ever Better Eating, Better Learning Innovation Award.   The Green Peppers (Ms Usmani,  Jane Abraham, Rhuairidh, and Natasha) competed against the Red Tomatoes (Ms Cushley, Linda Gibson, Susannah and Razin) to create the best afternoon tea from a box of mystery ingredients.  Watched by upper school pupils and invited guests both teams produced delicious teas.  The Red Tomatoes were judged to have narrowly won the vote with their offering of bruschetta and vol au vents.

After the vote Alistair McIntyre, the ASSIST chair, presented Ben and Zara with the award.  He spoke very highly of the school, saying that the work being done at Busby involving food is outstanding and that we are leading the way nationally.

Our thanks go to all team members from our Ready, Steady, Cook!challenge and to our VIP guests Janice Collins (Head of Service), Maureen Sneddon (QIO), Alistair McIntyre (ASSISTFM),  Pamela Renton (Spaceright), Jason McKeown (Unilever), Gary Johnstone (Education Scotland), Lorna Aitken (Education Scotland), Loraine Lawrie (Facilities Management Quality Manager) and Nicki Joiner (Catering Co-ordinator).  Thank you for attending and making our award presentation so special.

From 5th of December 2016, a person smoking in a car which is carrying passengers under 18 years of age will be breaking the law. Offenders could face a £100 fixed penalty fine.

The Smoking Prohibition (Children in Motor Vehicles) (Scotland) Act 2016, creates a new criminal offence, committed by any adult (aged 18 or over), where that adult smokes in a private motor vehicle in the presence of a child (under 18years of age), while that vehicle is in a public place. The aim of the legislation is to protect children and young people from the harmful effects of exposure to second-hand smoke (SHS) in a confined space.

Exposure to second-hand smoke in cars involves higher concentrations of health-threatening chemicals than in larger, open areas. Even if the windows are opened or air conditioning is used, harmful particles can remain in the atmosphere long after the visible smoke has disappeared. The restriction of a vehicle also means individuals are unable to move away from the smoke.

We all have an obligation to protect children and young people from the risks to their life and health, caused by the exposure to second hand smoke and ensure that every child in Scotland has the best start in life. Growing up in a smoke-free environment is an important part of that.

The Scottish Government hope that the introduction of this legislation will help their drive to cut the number of children exposed to second-hand smoke to 6 per cent by 2020. This is a momentous step in pulling Scotland on the path to becoming a tobacco-free generation.

Super Hero Sports Day 17th March 2016

Following on from a recent homework task, voting is underway to choose our Sporting Super Hero Mascot.

Superhero

Super Hero Sports Day is on 17th March when pupils can come to school dressed as their favourite Sporting Hero or ready to participate in their favourite sport.  P.E. activities will take place throughout the day which will demonstate the Busby Core Values and how they are central to sportsmanshop.  As this will also be STEM week we will also be looking the body and how it responds to exercise and the benefits of keeping healthy.
