Girls Active Day

On Friday, Barrhead girls participated in National Girls Active Day which was a huge success.  All female pupils in the school had the opportunity to participate in a few activity sessions including dance, yoga and fitness. Every girl involved from S1-6 then performed the dance at the closing ceremony at the end of the day. We hope that this has inspired our girls to get active and enjoy physical activity. Thanks to all staff involved, and a particular thanks to our three female Young Ambassadors; Donna Smith, Kirsty McGinley and Caitlin Kinnear.

Under 16’s vs under 18’s football

Barrhead High School’s under 18s football team hosted the most local derby ever – a match against Barrhead High’s under 16s!  The game was closer than anyone had expected: with both teams playing superbly as they attempted to claim the pride.  Jamie Cochran gave the under-18s the lead with a fine goal and it looked as though it might be a smooth sail for the seniors when they were given a penalty not long after.  However the shot was saved by the in-form 16s goalkeeper Ross Cooper.  The game really took off when a bullet-header from Steven Pringle gave the younger team the equaliser.  The enthralling game could be summed up as a great defensive show from both teams as the defenders were more than matching the strikers.  In regulation time, the game finished 1-1; with the seniors taking the victory in a, just as even, penalty competition.  Regardless of the result, the performance of both teams stands them in good stead for the coming season. Well Done!

Fundraising Cycle – back on this week!

We cancelled the cycle last Thursday due to poor weather – we didn’t want the young folk sitting in wet clothes for the rest of the day.

However the weather looks promising for tomorrow so S1 – S4 will cycle during Periods 1-4 tomorrow (Thursday). The only difference this week is that pupils will come to school in their uniforms and will change into their PE/cycling gear at their cycling period.

S5 and S6 pupils will do their cycling next Thursday (weather permitting!).

GET ON YOUR BIKES, FOLKS!

Girls Get Active Day – Friday 3rd October

All female pupils will be taking part in national Girls Get Active Day! A host of different activities have been organised throughout the day including dance, fitness, games and yoga. All female pupils should come to school in their PE kit including their purple PE top. If pupils are unable to wear the purple school top a black t-shirt would be the best alternative. They will remain in this for the whole day, so no school uniform is needed.

Fundraising Cycle – Thursday 25th September

POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER UNITL NEXT THURS 2nd THURS 9th – TO BE CONFIRMED.

Pupils (and staff) will get on their bikes this week to raise funds for the school. The school fund is used to support many activities around the school – equipment for clubs, buses for trips, strips for teams, rewards for the Merit Scheme and much more – all the little extras that add to the educational experience of our young folk.

On Thursday, pupils will go out to Cowan Park and cycle in groups around the paths surrounding the grass area containing the bandstand. All bikes, high-vis tops and helmets will be provided (and will be compulsory). Staff and S6 pupils will be there to supervise and we will have notices warning the public of the event. Hopefully it will not be as cold this time as it was in these pictures.

The goal for the day is to cycle a total of 500 miles between all the participants so not only will this raise funds, it will contribute to the health and wellbeing of the school community.

If you are in the area, you would be welcome to come and cheer the pupils on – but please look out for bikes! Our thanks to the ERC Parks Dept for the use of the parks and to Friends of Cowan Park for helping us bring it to the public’s attention.

So to all the pupils … GET ON YOUR BIKES!

Head Boy & Girl

After an extensive selection process, which involved S6 students writing a personal statement and attending an interview with Mr Sinclair, Mrs Crawford and Mr Weighton – the following students were successfully elected:

Alan Watson – Head Boy
Claire Dickson – Head Girl

Both students have already completed their first official engagement – they met Mrs Shaw (Director of Education) and other Head Boys & Girls from schools across the authority. We wish Alan and Claire every success.

The science teachers of Barrhead High School were joined by Head Teacher Andy Sinclair to face the Ice Bucket Challenge. Pupils gathered round at the morning interval to watch these hardy souls meet their fate. Over £320 was raised and will be split between MacMillan Cancer and local charity East Renfrewshire Good Causes. Thanks to all who supported the fund raising.
