Girl Cycling Club

The recent addition of a Girls Cycling Club to the Barrhead High School after schools programme is providing the opportunity for S1 to S6 girls to experience cycling in it’s many forms: track, downhill and cycle cross are those done so far.  All girls are welcome at the club regardless of previous experience or ability.

Barrhead’s Cycling Club is organised by a number of enthusiastic cyclist teachers throughout the school, and will include trips to various venues around Glasgow, such as the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome and Whitelees Windfarm.  Recent events at the club have included a trip to the outdoor cycle centre at Bellahouston Park and a fancy dress halloween cycle (where a number of onsie’s were out in show).

The club runs every Wednesday after school, meeting at the school theatre.  In addition to this, club members meet Thursday lunchtimes in the community wing to socialise with one another and plan upcoming events.

Future plans for the club include using money supplied by the ‘Fit for Girls Programme’ to kit the girls out in team outfits: including helmets, tops, shorts or trousers and gloves.

Rugby Club

Do you fancy trying Rugby? If so, come along to the first training session on Tuesday, 29th Oct at 3.45pm.

All year groups are welcome and the club is open to both boys and girls.

Depending on the weather the club will either train on the new astro turf pitch or in the gym.  See Mr Berry (Geography Dept) for more info.

WATER WORKS PROJECT – VOTE NOW PLEASE!!!

Barrhead High School, along with ‘Still Game’, a local retired people’s club and East Renfrewshire Council are through to the final voting stage in the Grow Wild competition with a chance to win £100,000 of Big Lottery Funding.

The Water Works project aims to transform the abandoned sewage works into an industrial wildlife area, using the derelict sewage tanks as giant experimental planters where wild flower habitats can be carefully created. If successful the project will play an important role in our pupils achieving their John Muir Trust Discovery Level Award and in the school renewing its Green Flag status.

There are only 3 projects shortlisted for the whole of Scotland … and there will only be one winner. The result now depends on the public vote … so we need your help!

Voting is now open and will close on the 3rd November. Please vote now at www.vote.growwilduk.com

Changes in SQA Special Arrangements

The SQA have issued new guidelines with regards to special arrangements. With the introduction of the new Literacy qualification at National 3/4 there have been some changes to the support on offer for pupils with Additional Support Needs. For the Literacy Unit only pupils will not be allowed to access support from a human reader and scribe, but will be allowed to use technology to support them. All other courses and units will still allow the use of readers and scribes. Click on the link below for more information about the support on offer.

Happy 21st Birthday Bipolar Scotland

Bipolar Scotland, a Paisley based charity, celebrated its 21st birthday with a grand lunch in the Menzies Hotel Glasgow on Friday, 4th October.
The charity was delighted that a group of 6th year girls, including  Head Girl Alice McNair, agreed to help out on the day. The girls made up goody bags, ran the raffle and welcomed guests. One of the girls, Lorna Cairns, had been involved in the organising of the event,  sourcing some fantastic raffle prizes and goodies.
Well done to all the S6 girls who got involved.
About the Group
Bipolar Scotland has a support group meeting in East Renfrewshire, at Orchardhill Parish Church, 12 Church Road, Giffnock. The group meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month from 6.30-8pm and is open to anyone affected by bipolar disorder. Further information can be found on their website or telephone the friendly office staff on 0141 560 2050 if you would like more information.  You can also follow on twitter at @BipolarScotland.
