‘Tea with a Refugee’ Event

Our ‘Tea with a Refugee’ event today related to holocaust Memorial Day and aimed to get the S3 pupils thinking about the lessons that we can learn today.

Bill Clark from the Holocaust Educational Trust, opened the event and introduced the main speakers.

The S3 pupils had the privilege of meeting Henry and Ingrid Wuga who escaped the holocaust in Germany and heard something of their story of how they escaped from Nazi Germany during the war to end up as refugees in Glasgow.

They also heard from a more recent refugee to Glasgow, Alex Deng from Kenya. Although he arrived in Glasgow 65 years later, it is sad to realise people are still facing similar issues. Pupils then had the opportunity to ask questions of the three visitors.

The event was organised by S6 pupil Kirsty Robson assisted by Erin Brown and Chris Hughes (all of whom have visited the Auschwitz Concentration Camp with the Holocaust Memorial Trust) with some help from Mrs Smith and Mr Maybury. We appreciated the presence of  local MP Paul Masterton and Councillor Paul O’Kane.

After the presentation, some of the pupils from the Rights Respecting School and members of staff had the chance to meet and have ‘tea with a refugee’. It will be a special event in the young people’s memory.

Barrhead High School Official Opening

Representatives of pupils, parents and staff joined with East Renfrewshire councillors and officials as well as some of the partners who were involved in building the new school, for the official opening earlier today.

Provost Jim Fletcher welcomed everyone to the new school before a very powerful video showing life in the new school, created by our multimedia technician Matthew Mathieson, was played. It can be seen at the link below and is already on the East Renfrewshire Facebook site with some photos and videos (check also the Parent Council Facebook page and Twitter for more).
