S3 – Duke of Edinburgh Presentation

Firstly, Thank You to all the parents, carers and students who took part in the virtual DOFE Information Evening last night. It was a lengthy presentation, but I hope you now have all the knowledge you need to make good progress with the Bronze DOFE Award.

If you missed the presentation, the following documents will be useful:

  1. DOFE Parents Information Evening 2020
  2. DOFE Physical PDF
  3. DOFE Skill PDF
  4. DOFE Volunteering PDF

The current restrictions are making it more difficult to complete the award and as a result Duke of Edinburgh Scotland have relaxed some of their rules to allow students to complete their physical, skill and volunteering closer to home. More info can be found on the #DOFEWithADifference website.

In particular, with S3 DOFE students thinking about each of their sections, the Activities Ideas List is a good place to start.

Once registered the eDOFE account is where students upload all their evidence. If you need advice on how to use eDOFE then these eDOFE Training Videos may be useful.

Timescales going forward:

  1. By the end of October, Students are required to complete a registration form and pay £22 through ParentPay.
  2. By the end of October, students need to decide which physical, skill and volunteering they can undertake, and which section will be their 6-month section.
  3. By the end of May 2021, students need to have (or almost have)completed all three sections and have all evidence uploaded into their eDOFE account.

If students are unsure how to progress with their DOFE, then please see Mr Boag ASAP.

Engineering Academy

The Engineering Academy offers an alternative route into an Engineering degree at the University of Strathclyde.  The first year is an enhanced HNC programme which is taught at one of seven partner colleges and allows direct transfer into a variety of degree programmes

We have the opportunity to work with the Engineering Academy to support our students onto their programme.  If any senior students wish to be part of a Question & Answer session or wish to speak to a few Engineering Academy Graduates who can tell them more about their experience and how the academy supported them through their studies, then please see Mr Boag (Maths Dept).

The programme code on UCAS is 0BRT.

Get involved with #MyJob or #MyJourney

SmartSTEMs is a charity that we have worked with for 6 years now, who inspire and engage our S1 students with all things STEM.  Every year a number of our S1 students would attend a smartSTEMs event and hear from industry leaders about the interesting, creative and varied STEM careers open to them. Students would also have the opportunity to get hands-on with technologies such as drones, cyber security and many others.

With all SmartSTEMs events cancelled they are looking to create a series of short STEM related videos on two things:

  1. #MyJob – what STEM field you work in and what skills that mainly involves.
  2. #MyJourney – the route you took to get to where you are today.

If there are any parents or carers, working in a STEM job, who are willing to share their experiences, then please register your details directly with SmartSTEMs. Please be aware that the STEM videos will be uploaded on to the SmartSTEMs YouTube Channel and could be shared with schools as far afield as London and the Netherlands.

Finally, if you wish to learn more about SmartSTEMs, then give their Annual Report a read – Barrhead High feature on page 17.
