Pupil Support Department

The Pupil Support team aims to support every pupil in their development as individuals, and to enable them to be happy, safe and to achieve their potential.

Our priority is to ensure a pupil centred approach by:

  • Encouraging pupils to make informed decisions and choices
  • Working in partnership with parents/carers, other agencies and the wider community.
  • Promoting an ethos of respect in line with our school values

We operate a vertical pupil support system which means that your child, and other brothers and sisters, will have the same Pastoral Support Teacher.

At Barrhead High School we feel it is very important that a good working relationship can be established, not only between teacher and pupil, but, equally importantly, between Pastoral Teacher and parent/carer. We hope that if you have any concerns or questions you will not hesitate to contact us.

In addition to their normal teaching duties, Pastoral Support staff are involved in a number of important activities:

  • Welcoming new S1 pupils as part of our primary transition programme
  • Monitoring the attainment and achievements of all pupils
  • Monitoring attendance and late coming
  • Supporting pupils with pathways options choices in S2, S4 and S5
  • Supporting pupils with their post-school transition, for example, applying for college, university, jobs and modern apprenticeships
  • Supporting pupils with regards to their emotional health and wellbeing
  • Working with partner agencies to provide tailored individual support, e.g. Educational Psychology, Youth Counselling, CAMHS, School Nurse, Social Work, Children 1st and more.

Pastoral Curriculum

All pupils in S1-S6 have one period of Pastoral every week. This is always taught by their pastoral care teacher.

Our programme covers many of the Curriculum for Excellent Health and Wellbeing Benchmarks in addition to Skills for Learning, Life and Work.

Pupils from S4-S6 additionally undertake activities to ensure they meet their entitlements outlined in the Career Education Standard (3-18) to ensure they are prepared for their transition out of school as part of the school’s Developing the Young Workforce initiative.

Pupils from S1-S4 also cover the Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood Education curriculum in their Pastoral lessons. All content is age and stage appropriate.
