Even More STEM! 🧬

We have been enjoying STEM week in P5.17 and on Wednesday we had a visit from University of Strathclyde PhD students! They spoke to us about their experiences in Forensic Chemistry 🧪 we then helped to solve a mystery using Chromatography 👀 And played Periodic Table Bingo ✔️

In the afternoon we completed a Paper Chain Challenge in our houses where we were given a single piece of paper, scissors and glue and we worked together in groups to try and make the longest chain ⛓️

Today we worked together on the Jelly Tot Structure challenge where we had to use our engineering and design skills to build a structure from jelly tots and cocktail sticks! We then tested their strength by seeing how many books our tower could hold 📚

STEM Week 🧪

We had a busy start to STEM Week today which began with a workshop from SmartSTEM 🧪 we heard all about careers in STEM and then completed a paper plate tower competition. We were given 5 plates, scissors and cello-tape and worked together in groups to build the tower as high as possible 👀

This afternoon we learnt all about the Mars Ingenuity helicopter 🚁 we then made paper helicopters of our own and tested them through flight. We watched the propellers in motion as they descended 🤩

Our Safe Space ✨

We wanted to say a huge thank you to the PTA for the generous donation of money to create a safe space in our classroom ✨

We decided to use our tent area and added fairy lights to create a calm atmosphere around it ⭐️ we discussed as a class that we would like some squishmallow teddy’s, mindfulness colouring books and fidget toys to relieve any stress we might have ☺️

Campaigners Visit 🏗️

Today we had a special visit from Mark Brand who works in planning for East Renfrewshire Council. Mark did a fantastic workshop with the whole class looking at the housing development opposite our school and how we could re-design it to make it even more wildlife friendly 🌳🪷🦫

We enjoyed working in groups to design our own developments and incorporating our own ideas like bug hotels, hedgehog homes and bird boxes!

A huge thanks to Mark for coming in to work with us ☺️

Cracking Co-ordinates 🧮

We have been working hard on developing our confidence in co-ordinates this week.
We have been learning the ‘along the corridor, up the stairs’ rule to help us identify points on the x and y axis.

Today we were plotting points and joining them together to create an emoji 😍

Designers Deliveries 🧵

This week our class worked brilliantly to complete their Designers Project 🧵 using the skills we have developed over our block the class worked together to produce sustainable cotton bags that will be used to deliver lunch bands to classes 🪡

Today we delivered our finished bags to the lunch staff ⭐️ well done to all of the class on an amazing project!
