Week Beginning 18th March

Last week primary 6.24 visited the Vue Cinema in Hamilton, and went to watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. We all payed close attention to the film, because the following week it led to us to writing reviews about the film in our jotters. In the review, we included information about the film, preferences on the cinema, and our thoughts and opinions about the movie.

Firstly we worked in teams to answer questions about the film

Then we thought about how to club the answers together in paragraphs

Next we produced our own reviews in our jotters

Coders

We started our P6 coders journey outside by playing and learning the importance of accurate instructions in the correct order. Using grids on the playground we led each other to find our way around the playground – Mrs Kelly challenged some of us to do this blindfolded!

The next part of our coding experience was to create storyboards of our ideas making sure we included all the success criteria – to create a chase game, show a score and have flying objects.

Then it was on to coding on the Chromebooks. we watched tutorials and learned from each other and created some incredible games.

And we rounded it off by running an arcade in our class and invited all of P4 and P5 along to play in our arcade.  They loved it and we loved welcoming them and encouraging them to play our games.

Week beginning 30th October

A huge thanks to Mrs Gordon for organising such a fun spooktacular sports event this week. Despite the cold, we all had lots of fun and really appreciate the sports coaches from Mearns Castle leading all the activities.

Look at these fabulous carved pumpkins too that many people in the school created for this month’s house challenge.

Week beginning – 2nd October

We started this week watching an online assembly run by the charity Ada Scotland on Technology in Sport. Practising our note taking skills, we listened carefully and created written reports on what we learned. We were also given the challenge to create a new piece of sports kit using technology to improve sport in some way. Lots of ideas were shared in class and we can’t wait to see if these kits become reality in the future.

PE

We continue to work hard on our fitness in PE and learned a new game using hula hoops and music.

Flowers

Having studied how lilies change over time and looked at them under a microscope last week, Mrs Kelly brought in another bunch this week and our botanists prepared them and put them in water so we can watch them change each day.

Leadership Assembly

Mrs Kennedy led an inspirational assembly on Thursday where all the pupil leadership groups were announced. Here are some photos of us receiving certificates and badges for our leadership roles.

Week beginning – 25th September

Unfortunately we weren’t in school for most of this week due to strike action.

Most of the class accessed online learning through our google classroom which was great. We covered our usual timetable as much as we could with PE lessons, STEM challenges, reading challenges, daily maths activities and an extended writing piece.

Week beginning – 18th September

Two weeks ago Mrs Thompson gave our class a bunch of flowers to thank us for being so accommodating and showing some visitors how a class might work in the Makers Space. amazingly the flowers are still blooming, so we thought it would be a nice idea to learn how to draw lilies. Here are some of our masterpieces.

Week beginning – 28th August

We’ve been busy this week getting back into routines again, writing in our jotters and remembering all our learning from our previous years in Mearns and in other schools.

One of our tasks this week was to work out our favourite strategies to help us with our spelling.

We also finalised our class charter and a google charter which is now on our google classroom.

Week beginning 14th August

Welcome back to Mearns.

We’ve had a busy week getting to know each other, welcoming new class members and deciding on rules and routines.  Whilst doing this we reminded ourselves of the UN convention on the Rights of the Child and created our rules with these in mind. We’ll have a display showing this next week.

Site visit 🌾🏗️🏠

Today we visited the Mctaggart and Mikel site across from our school following our campaign to preserve wildlife in new housing developments. We planted wildflower seeds and were the very first children to try out their brand new playground ☀️
