Maths Week Scotland

It’s been lovely to be in class with 5.17 this week.

Here are some of the things we have been doing:

We took part in the Sumdog competition. We liked all of the games.

The Maths Leaders told us about Numeracy Blueprint boards and we used these to work on rounding numbers.

We did an outdoor scavenger hunt. The class enjoyed working with partners and it was great fun running to find the questions.

We practised our times tables whilst playing hockey!

We used chalk to create giant clocks with sticks.

We have been using our maths skills in the kitchen to calculate the weigh of ingredients needed.

STEM fortnight

Our stem focus this year is ‘Innovation for the future’.

We are focussing on Hospitals.

Our young architects began by planning the hospital.

Soaperheroes

Yesterday we had a chance to check how important it is to wash our hands properly. After rubbing some Bug Lotion on our hands, we have checked how germs would spread- our hands glowed under the UV light (nails were especially bad!). We then split into two groups to test what is more effective: washing hands with soap and water or hand sanitising. The results were clear… Wash your hands with soap and water whenever possible.

Science

During our Science lessons this term we looked into how natural resources and materials are being used and the importance of their conservation. We have discussed the impact of our actions on the environment and decided to make posters encouraging others to take different steps to help out planet.

This term, we also worked with magnets, investigating which objects are magnetic and how magnetic field works. We conducted a series of challenges to see how magnets exert a non-contact force and then designed, constructed and played our own games using magnets. It was lots of fun!

Next, we made mind maps of what Energy is and talked about different types of Energy. We talked about heat, sound, light and electrical energy and we are able to identify examples of different sources of energy.

Buoyancy experiment

We tested the buoyancy of the boats that we made using coins or marbles. We had to count how many coins or marbles that we could fit into our boats.
