Week beginning – 2nd October

We started this week watching an online assembly run by the charity Ada Scotland on Technology in Sport. Practising our note taking skills, we listened carefully and created written reports on what we learned. We were also given the challenge to create a new piece of sports kit using technology to improve sport in some way. Lots of ideas were shared in class and we can’t wait to see if these kits become reality in the future.

PE

We continue to work hard on our fitness in PE and learned a new game using hula hoops and music.

Flowers

Having studied how lilies change over time and looked at them under a microscope last week, Mrs Kelly brought in another bunch this week and our botanists prepared them and put them in water so we can watch them change each day.

Leadership Assembly

Mrs Kennedy led an inspirational assembly on Thursday where all the pupil leadership groups were announced. Here are some photos of us receiving certificates and badges for our leadership roles.

Place value problem solving

The weather picked up a little, and although the ground was wet from heavy showers this morning we were able to take our jackets off and enjoy a warm dry afternoon of learning.

Using number stones and rainbow sticks we worked in teams to solve a number of challenges we were set. They really got us talking and thinking and Mrs Kelly was impressed with how we tackled the different problems together.

Outdoor rounding and multiples of ten

We spent time today reinforcing our understanding of rounding numbers to the nearest ten and adding and subtracting multiples of ten. We did this through various games and challenges which involved listening carefully to instructions and concentrating on each action we had to take. Here are some photographs of our activities and learning.

Outdoor number exploring

Today we made the shape of a pentagon and agreed that it must have five corners and five sides but that the sides didn’t have to be the same length.

We then moved on to play some games to encourage us to think about how we manipulate numbers and the easiest way to add them together to find the total. We looked for numbers that add to ten first, this seemed to be the favourite strategy! After that we looked for double numbers and near doubles. It was amazing just how many different ways we found to add up a few numbers and it was great to see how other people do this.

Outdoor mental maths and problem solving

After a triangle hunt on the way out to the pitch we organised ourselves into the shape of a triangle. While we were doing that some of the girls and boys noticed some triangles made by the clouds…..unfortunately they moved too quickly and we didn’t quite take the photos on time!

We then continued our learning using our mental maths skills to solve problems making certain totals along the sides of triangles.

and create friends of ten rockets by creating calculations that gave the answer ten inside the shape of a rocket made using sticks.

The sun shone for us all afternoon too which was great? 🌞

HTU thinking

Here we are outside getting into our shape for the week, a pentagon. We used shells to help us get organised correctly.

We spent lots of time practising making numbers using the rainbow sticks and enjoyed competitions making the largest and smallest numbers we could.

We also enjoyed some problem solving as we worked out all the different numbers that we could make with our selected sticks depending on which colour was which value. The second picture shows a set of sticks that could only make one three digit number no matter what value each colour was.

Outdoor mental maths

Learning outdoors was great fun today even though it was a little chilly.

We started by playing a logic game in our shape of the week, a square. After that we moved on to revising and practising some of our mental maths strategies by playing a team game using number stones. All we had to do was organise the numbers into the best pairs or groups to help us add them together in our heads. Finally we played a mapping game with, cones, numbered balls and maps.

What a busy afternoon! 😊

Number Square Challenge

We have enjoyed trying to complete the number square challenge.  In order to compete the challenge we had to use our knowledge of numbers to 100, numbers before and numbers after.

Bar charts

We have enjoyed creating our own bar charts. We voted for our favourite pets and used this information to create our bar chart. We answered questions on the information that we could see displayed.
