Week beginning 14th August

Welcome back to Mearns.

Weโ€™ve had a busy week getting to know each other, welcoming new class members and deciding on rules and routines. ย Whilst doing this we reminded ourselves of the UN convention on the Rights of the Child and created our rules with these in mind. Weโ€™ll have a display showing this next week.

Social Enterprise Visit ๐Ÿ’ญ

Today we had a visit from social enterprise Scotland and we discussed current affairs in the world that we care about and what business we could create to help make the world a better place ๐Ÿ’ญ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

A busy week in P5.17 ๐ŸŒŸ

In class we have been working on direct speech in grammar and creating our own sentences to punctuate ๐Ÿ“

Outside we enjoyed races in our houses (when we finally got a dry day! ๐ŸŒง๏ธ)

Today we created a cityscape for Bonfire night using chalk and building stencils we created ๐ŸŽ†

Fundraising Fun day ๐Ÿ˜„

We had a great first day back at school with our Fundraising Fun Day!

We started the day with a pantomime by M&M productions – Sleeping beauty ๐Ÿ‘ธย

We then had a special author visit in the street and took part in lots of creative activities to create our own characters and stories.

We finished the day with sports activities outdoors with active schools and volunteers.

There is still time to donate on ParentPay โญ๏ธ ย thanks to all our family and friends for supporting us!

Giglets and Autumn Art ๐Ÿ“–๐Ÿ‚

Today we enjoyed a new text on Giglets called ‘Not Alone’, a short story about friendship and inclusion. We worked in pairs to answer Multiple Choice Questions and Higher Order Thinking Questions โœ๐Ÿผ

Afterwards, we spent the afternoon in the art room and created an autumn tree using our hands and fingers. ย We discussed using longer brush strokes to create texture on the tree and mixing different colours together to make new shades.

Passwords

The children had fun cracking passwords today as part of Cyber Week Scotland. We started by having simple, one-word passwords. They were easy to guess!

We then found out how much harder to was to crack them by adding a number. It was getting trickier!

Finally we added a colour too. By using three simple words, we were able to make passwords that were easy for us to remember, but hard for others to guess.

We used autodraw.com to draw options for our passwords.

Outdoor learning

What a day ! To say we got a bit wet would be an understatement!

We got ourselves outside and into our shape for this week, a triangle, as we planned our learning together.

The rain came down in buckets as we learned all about maps and how different objects can be symbols to represent different things on a map. We decided that grass could represent grass, leaves could represent trees and sticks could represent the pitch.

We were covered in grass once we got back to the school door, so Frank helped some of us dance it all off before we trailed it all inside!
