Being a Rights Respecting School is an important part of our identity at Robert Burns Academy. As a combined school we have our Bronze Status and are working toward our Silver Status in 2022/23.  At the centre of a RRS is the understanding that all children have rights. A comprehensive view of all the rights that children have can be gained from viewing The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

From these 42 rights the pupils, staff and Parent Council chose 6 that were most important to our school. They are included in the poster below, designed by former RBA pupil Kyle Richmond, who left in June 2023.

As part of our journey to silver our S1-S6 pupils have become more aware of their rights in PLP classes each week and contribute to departmental tasks throughout the year. We also have a RRS Pupil Voice Group made up of pupils from each PLP and we discuss our commitment and approach to Children’s Rights during assemblies. As well as looking at how we promote rights within our own school and community we also support children’s rights across the world and as such have raised thousands of pounds for children who were impacted by war in Ukraine and by the earthquake tragedies in Syria and Turkey. We also raise money through Mary’s Meals for our partner school in Libya, Jebbeh Kiazolu. Through our commitment to fundraising we have been able to offer food and education to hundreds of children in Libya. RBA pupils also take part in a Soccer Aid to raise funds for much needed food and healthcare to those who need it most. Thank you to all our fundraisers in the school and wider community!
