Term 4 – week 7!

We are still practising our persuasive writing skills and this week Primary 4/5 wanted to ask Mrs Govans for a ‘Yes Day’ before the end of term. Do you think we will manage to persuade Mrs Govans? Do you think we will be able to keep our promises? I think everyone done  a pretty good job!

For health and wellbeing we looked at peer pressure this week; we looked at positive peer pressure, negative peer pressure and gave lots of good examples of when we have been pressured into doing something we didn’t want to do. We then completed a short task on peer pressure to show our understanding of the topic.

For mental maths we were asked to complete subtraction questions using any strategy we wanted. As you can see below, some people chose to use the formal written method, some chose an empty number line and others chose adjusting for easier numbers/friendly numbers.

Term 4 – Week 6!

This week for literacy we completed a character profile on a character of our choice from our novel Danny the Champion of the World. We were able to choose any character from the novel except from Danny and his father. Take a look at some of our finished profiles below.

We are still working our way through our fraction topic and this week we focussed on comparing and ordering fractions. We completed a cut and stick activity, questions from the board and also a few worksheets. This was a good reminder on how to use the more than, less than and equal to symbols.

For social subjects this week we were learning about capital cities. We created a mind-map of all the capital cities we knew before completing a research activity on the capital cities of Europe.

Term 4 – Week 5!

We are nearing the end of our class novel, Danny the Champion of the World, however we are still unsure as to how the story is going to end. We are continuing to use our 6 reading strategies to complete tasks related to the novel and this week we focussed on metalinguistics. This strategy helps us to find out the meaning of unfamiliar or tricky words.

This week for mental maths we were revisiting the partitioning strategy which help us break down larger calculations into more manageable calculations. This strategy seems to be a favourite in P4/5.

We are still learning all about substance misuse and the effects different substances can have on your body. This week we looked at the different categories drugs can be broken into; socially acceptable drugs, prescribed drugs, over the counter medicines and controlled (illegal) drugs. We then completed an activity to help consolidate our learning.

Term 4 – Week 4!

This week we continued with our persuasive writing, although our focus changed to persuading someone at home to get us a new pet. Some pupils researched the cost of the animal they wanted to help boost their argument that pets are not too expensive, however others were shocked at the prices of their desired pets. We had a wide variety of wanted pets; dogs, cats, rabbits, bearded dragons and an axolotl.

We are still continuing with our fractions topic and this week we began to look at equivalent fractions. We started by making our own fraction walls which we then later used to help us figure out some equivalent fractions.

This week for R.E we read the story The Call of David. This led to some good discussion about the quote ‘never judge a book by its cover’. We then completed a sequencing activity in which we had to put the story in the correct order.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Term 4 – Week 3!

We have started our new Health and Wellbeing topic which looks at substance misuse. So far, we have discussed smoking and the effects it has on your body as well as alcohol and the effects it can have on your body. We completed some activities linked to these to help consolidate our learning.

We have continued with our persuasive writing and this week we were trying to persuade someone at home to take us to the park. We had some very good reasons as to why we should be allowed to go to the park after school – some even promised to clean their rooms and do the dishes!

We have also been learning about Christianity within our Religious Education lessons. This week we were focussing on religious artefacts that are associated with Christianity.  Some artefacts were well known objects whereas others were new ones we learned.

Have a lovely long weekend everyone!
