My Hero Project – A little update

As part of our Big Talk, the children have been asked to talk about their hero.  However, we understand that not everyone has someone they would necessarily describe as a hero, and we want everyone to feel as excited about their chosen topic.

We are therefore opening up the project slightly.  The theme will remain ‘My Hero’ , but children can interpret this in their own way.  A hero could be a person they admire, a family member, a famous figure, an inspirational character, a hobby, a sport, a favourite interest or even something they are really passionate about.

We want them to enjoy the experience, feel confident and, most importantly, have something they are excited to talk about!

Please let me know if you need any resources to complete the project.

Thank you for your continued support!

Big Talk: My Hero

P2/3 Big Talk

Title:  My Hero

Pupils have been given a project to prepare and give a short 5 minute talk about their hero.  This can be someone they know or someone famous that they look up to.  Some ideas might be to include:  Why they are their hero? Information about the person?  What qualities does the person have to make them a hero?

They can present in various ways including poster, PowerPoint (emailed to me), photographs, bringing in items.

Children should practise their talk at home in order to be able to fluently talk to the class.  We are looking at:

  • Using expression and tone to engage audience
  • Good eye contact
  • Clear and structured talk
  • Includes detail
  • Can use notes, props or technology effectively
  • Can answer some questions about their talk

Talks should be ready for week beginning Monday 16th November.

Wk ending 30th October

We have had another busy week in P2/3. We started our new topic, Space. We completed our ‘I wonder’ grid to help us plan what we want to learn throughout the topic. We started by looking at Earth and making fantastic Earth artwork. We also wanted to learn about the planets in our solar system and their order.

We have also been completing more reading tasks this week, including dictionary skills, comprehension and jumbled sentences.

We’ve been finishing our Place Value topic this week. We have been learning 1, 10 and 100 more and less. We have also started learning how to use partitioning as an addition strategy.

We began our new RME topic, Gifts and Giving, where we are learning how  different religions give and receive gifts. This week we learned about the festival of Eid. We made lanterns to show how light is used in the celebrations. They have made a lovely display too.

In basketball we worked on bounce passes.

We also had a fantastic Halloween party! Look at our amazing costumes!

We were so proud of Riia this week, placing 1st in her recent dancing competition. We were amazed by the size of your trophy! Well done!

Wk ending 23rd October

We have had a busy first week back after our October break.  We have been continuing to look at different reading strategies.  This week we looked at ‘Retelling’.  We read Winne the Witch and had to identify the characters, setting and problem.

We also had a really exciting visit from Phunky Foods.  We had lots of fun learning about lots of different fruit and vegetables.  We got to play games, explore the food, dress up and even do a taste test.

We looked at skeletons and bones this week too and made some skeleton xray art work.  We talked about using different tones in our work to make our bones look 3D.

We continued learning more basketball skills this week as well as fun new games.  We learned how to chest pass correctly to our team mates.

We have also had a lot of discussions this week about Growth Mindset. We talked about how important it is to be able to learn from mistakes and the power of ‘yet’. We designed our own Yeti monsters to decorate our class.

We also loved seeing Lawson’s amazing Halloween Art that he made at home. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Last Week of Term 1

What a busy term we have had! Finished off with a busy week!

You would not believe we all managed to stay silent for 30 whole minutes during our Harvest Hush In.  It was SO peaceful!

We have loved learning so much through our Book Study; The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. We finished it off this week with more fun activities.  We got another letter from Mr Grinling, asking us to create Lighthouse Learning Cards that shows him everything we have learned in our topic.  He wants to display them in his lighthouse to show them off to his friends!

We also want to thank Sheila and other kitchen staff who helped us make our very own Sea Biscuits, just like Mrs Grinlings.  We even got a tour of the kitchen to see all the equipment.  We loved the BIG mixer and ovens!  Our biscuits definitely passed the taste test too!

You will also see we brought home our very own Lighthouse Experts Certificates!  Well done everyone!

We were all so proud of Coila this week too.  It was lovely to see her certificate for being a Mascot for Stranraer FC.  Well done, Colia!

Week ending 2nd Oct

This week we have been learning another new reading strategy:  Metalingustics.  This means exploring the meaning of words.  We looked at some words in our book study, then we used our class dictionaries to help us learn new words.  We also loved playing ‘Fastest Finger’ game using our dictionaries, to see who could find the words first.

We have also been investigating numbers before and after.

We have been showing what we have learned about healthy eating by creating our own Healthy Eating Posters.  Don’t they look great!

We have also been learning more about lighthouses.  We have used Google Maps to find locations of some Scottish lighthouses and put them on our own Scotland map.

This week our Confident Individual is Jack.  Jack is showing increasing confidence when writing independently.  Well done!

Wk ending 25th Sept

This week we have been learning our new reading strategy, Prediction.  We talked about what we think would happen next to the fisherman’s lunch after the seagulls went to visit him.  We had some great ideas.

Through our I wonder discussion at the beginning of term, Coila and Mirryn wanted to learn more about seagulls.  We enjoyed watching lots of interesting videos to learn more about them and we made our own Seagull Fact Files and amazing, moving seagull crafts.

At PE, we have been learning how to dribble basketballs and skipping with Mrs Cook.

In Place Value, we have been learning how to order numbers from smallest to largest.

We were lucky enough to be invited along to P5’s amazing performance.  We loved listening to their wonderful singing.  Well done P5!

Our Successful Learner this week was Allie.   Allie has started Primary 3 with so much enthusiasm for learning.  She works hard to complete all her tasks and loves to challenge herself.   Well done Allie!

Wk ending 17th Sept

This week we have been learning the ‘th’, ‘ck’ and ‘nk’ sound.  We will continue focusing on these sounds next week.

We have also been practising our own set of common words that we are working on reading and writing.

We had a fantastic afternoon designing and building our own lighthouses.  I love how they are all unique and they have made a great display in our class.

We have also been continuing to partition numbers.  This week we focused on our jotter layout, making sure we were remembering to use a ruler.

What a fantastic start we have had in P2/3.  I hope you all have a lovely September weekend!

Wk ending 11th Sept

What an exciting week we have had this week. Mr Grinling, the Lighthouse Keeper, needed our help. His light stopped working and we had to become electrical engineers to help him. We learned all about electricity, building our own circuits and drawing technical maps.

Mrs Grinling also needed our help. She had heard that we have been learning about the Eatwell Plate, so she asked us to design a healthy lunch for Mr Grinling. We hope she loved our delicious, healthy lunch ideas.

We’ve also been continuing to investigate Place Value. We learned how to partition numbers.

We loved having a shared play with P1/2. Lawson was our Responsible Citizen this week as he took time to help some of the new P1s learn how to use the Chromebooks. What a great helper!

Wk ending 4th September

This week we have been continuing to learn about Place Value.  We were learning how to build numbers using base 10 material.

Through our Book study, we wanted to learn about the different parts of a lighthouse.  We were able to label the correct parts then self assess our work using Tickled Pink and Green for Growth.

We also explored and experimented  with watercolours to create our own landscape and lighthouse artwork.  What little artists we have in P2/3!  Look at their beautiful paintings…

We have also been learning about healthy eating through discussing the Eatwell Plate.  We discussed the importance of eating lots of different foods to give our bodies what they need to play, grow and be healthy.  We worked in partners to sort food into the correct categories.

We were all very excited to start learning how to play the ukuleles this week.  We have learned how to hold them correctly and how to strum and pluck them to make different sounds.

We also wanted to say a massive well done to Freddie who completed his 26th mile last night at Dumfries house with his cousin Louis and his mum. Well done Freddie! We are all very proud of you! ⭐️
