We have had a great time celebrating World Book Day today. Thank you to everyone for putting in so much effort with all the wonderful costumes!

We showed off our costumes and discussed our characters in class this morning, then we showed them off in front of the whole school. We did a quiz in our School Houses and then shared our favourite books with reading buddies from Primary 5/6.

We have been looking at The Rainbow Fish in class over the last week. We wrote our own Rainbow Fish book and looked at the setting, characters and re-telling the story. We also made Rainbow name plates which the children brought home today. We ended the day with fruit and a story.

It has been a very exciting week in our newly painted classroom. We have settled back into our space well and are excited to get our hard work back up on our walls. I will share our “new” classroom with you once it has been properly tidied and organised.

On Tuesday, PC Shirkie visited our class to talk to us about the job a police officer does. This was as part of our learning about “People who Help Us”. We learned all about police officers’ uniforms, had our finger prints taken and even got handcuffs (though we all managed to escape PC Shirkie’s arrest). A big thank you to PC Shirkie for visiting our class!

On Wednesday, we went into our community garden and did some bulb planting for the spring. We were lucky with the weather and even though it had been frozen in the morning, the sun was lovely and warm and had thawed the ground by the afternoon. Thank you to Margaret for coming into school to help us with our planting!

This week, P1s learned two new sounds – <e> and <u>. We practised letter formation, reading and writing simple sentences. P2s looked at <or> and <ur> and worked on different activities to help with their spelling. In maths, P1s were practising writing sums using + and =; P2s are now comparing numbers up to 100. We are also continuing to practise making patterns by copying them or making our own. We are getting better at creating repeating patterns. We have been very busy and have been working hard!

 

It has been an exciting week for us! Our classroom has been painted and we moved back into it this morning, just in time for Pudsey day.

We spent most of the week in the play area, a little treat for us. Here is what we have been up to:

We are learning about people who help us with Miss Smith. We have been learning all about what police officers do and how we can contact emergency Services.

In maths, we have been looking at comparing weight, using vocabulary like lighter / heavier and lightest / heaviest. We used cubes to measure how many cubes different toys weigh.

We had our first achievement assembly this week and celebrated everything that we have achieved in school and at home. Well done to everyone!

We had a great time doing some Pudsey activities today. We decorated our own Pudsey, did a Pudsey workout and listened to a Pudsey story. The best Pudsey even won a prize and we had the runner-up for the lower classes in our class – well done Mia!

We have been learning all about hedgehogs this week. Next week, we are planning to go into the garden to do some planting and we would like to build a hedgehog hibernation box with help from Maidsafe, too. The children have been fantastic at learning hedgehog facts and we painted, drew and made our own hedgehogs, too. We really improved our cutting skills as making our hedgehogs was quite a challenging job.

Primary 1s created their first description story last week and continued practising their writing this week. Primary 2s are also working on writing descriptions. When we were not working hard on writing and maths, we developed our skills doing different activities around the play area.

This week we will be working in our play area full time as our classroom walls are getting painted.

The classroom is all ready for this much needed refreshment and we will be able to return to it next week.

There has also been a change in our PE timetable. Children currently have Miss Smith as their teacher on a Tuesday whilst I work with small groups to support learning as well as taking on additional duties around the school. This is only temporary. However, Miss Smith will now do PE with the children on a Tuesday morning.

Our PE days are therefore on Mondays and Tuesdays for the time being. As we approach Christmas, children will also practise social dancing with P3/4 at the end of the week but they will not need to get changed into their PE clothes for this.

I will keep you updated on our classroom renovation and our progress this week. I’m aware that I have not given an update about last week and will do so as soon as I can.
