In maths this week we have been focusing on making amounts using the best combination of coins.

On Thursday we celebrated World Book Day.  We had so much fun reading our books from home. We spent time chatting about our favourite parts with our friends. After break, some of the children from the Reading Leadership group had set up a Gingerbread Man themed treasure hunt for us.  We worked in small teams finding all the characters.  In the afternoon Mrs Robertson came down to read us a story. It was a lovely day and we were surprised with a book each to take home!

In PE this week we continued to focus on balancing and rolling.  Here are some of our amazing balances.

We have had a consolidation week in literacy this week, going over all the sounds and common words we have learned so far.

In maths, we are still working on recognising coins and have started to learn about making amounts.

We had so much fun using the magnets to sort coins that we decided to learn about their properties. We learned about ‘magnetic field’ and that we can make magnets ‘attract’ and ‘repel’. We then tried to make magnet paths and follow the coin through the paper…

The rain stopped our walk this week but when the weather cleared we managed to get out and have some time playing outside. We played Superheroes, showed off our dance moves and built houses…

The children have been working really hard this week and have been using the iPads to capture their own learning. Check out their fantastic photos.

In Literacy we have been learning the ‘qu’ and ‘x’ sounds

In Maths we have started a topic on Money and have been working hard to recognise the coins from 1p to £2.  You can practice this at home by getting your child to sort and recognise coins and maybe even try to put them in order.

In PE this week we started our Gymnastics topic with Mrs Schendel and we focused on balancing and travelling on the mats.

We enjoyed another Cosmic Yoga session. This time it was Sonic theme! Can you see our little hedgehogs 🦔…

We have had a busy few days in Primary One. We have really focused on reading and have been trying really hard to sound out the words in our heads.

This week we have been learning the ‘y’ and ‘z’ sound.  We have been building yachts, painted yellow sunflowers, designed yogurt pots, drew zebras and created zoos…

We have also been learning how to work out missing number calculations using numicon…

We have started learning how to play the Glockenspiels in music this week too..

And had fun doing Dinosaur Cosmic Yoga…

We explored using the Base 10 materials to work out really challenging calculations! And had fun building with them too …

In literacy, we learned the ‘j’ and ‘z’ sound. We loved playing with jelly, having a game of jenga, making paper plate jellyfish, building jungles and measuring our jumps.

In maths, we have been using different tools to help us subtract. So far we have learned how to use our fingers, cubes, number lines and Rekenreks. We have also explored what our favourite tool is.

We have been working so hard this week. In literacy we have been learning the ‘h’ and ‘w’ sounds. On Monday and Tuesday we made happy faces with hair and hats, we built a hospital role play out of the blocks and had fun dressing up to care of each other. We also played hopscotch and then made it ever harder by adding an obstacle course first.

In maths we started learning to subtract and have been focusing on “taking away” 1, which we realised is just the number before, or a jump back on the numberline.

We also started looking at different tools we can use to help us subtract. So far we have used our fingers and cubes…

For our Scotland topic we have been reading Scots versions of some of our favourite stories and learning lots of new Scots words. One of our favourties is ‘tapselteerie’ which was in our class poem and means ‘upside-down’.

This week we have been learning the ‘b’ and ‘u’ sound. We worked hard to form the letters and make words using these sounds. When learning the ‘b’ sound had great fun bathing babies in bubbles, building bridges, ball pit fun, playing bingo, reading books and creating beautiful butterflies with a buddy. When learning the ‘u’ sound we played with underwater creatures, made ‘u’ umbrellas, designed underpants and built blocks up that we could go under.

In Numeracy, we have been learning how to add one and two as well as starting to learn about doubles.

It was a bit slippy for our walk this week so we decided to do some Cosmic Yoga in class. We loved moving our bodies to the Teenage Ninja Turtles video! 🐢

Primary One have worked so hard this week.  We have started our topic on Scotland and talked about what we know and what we would like to learn.

We  sent home our Scottish poem “Jock and Jean” on Wednesday.  Please practise this as much as possible as we will be performing it as a class at the Burns’ Celebration on Wednesday 31st January.

In PE we started learning some Social Dances and this week we tried the St Bernard’s Waltz and the Canadian barn dance.  The children were absolutely fantastic and had great fun twirling about the hall.

In Numeracy we have been learning all the different ways to make 10.

In Literacy we have started using our sounds to decode reading books and we have learned the ‘o’ sound.  We had great fun building offices with the blocks.

What a party we had today! We had a special visit from Santa too!
