P3N Homework Week Beginning 04.10.21
For homework this week please:
1) Log into Bug Club and choose a book to read from your ‘My Stuff’ section. Remember to complete the bug quizzes as you read.
2) This week our focus is the ‘ow’ joined phoneme.
Depending on the word, ‘ow’ can make a different sound, for example
ow in cow, brown and down sounds different to
ow in snow, blow and crow.

Below are some activity suggestions for you to choose from. Try to complete at least one activity using ‘ow’ and common words.

Capital letter spelling –write your spelling words using capital letters.

Constellation spelling–draw dots randomly and write the letters/joined phonemes for the word next to the dots, one at each dot. Then join the dots up in order to connect the word.

Memory Match –write each word twice onto paper and cut them up into cards. Lay them facedown and turn over two cards at a time to try and get a match.

Write sentences with your spelling and common words. Please remember our core targets.

Spelling Tic-tac-toe – draw a grid just like the one you would use for noughts and crosses, choose a word to play with from your spelling word list, play with your word, first to 3 in a row wins! Use a different word for each game.

Spelling boggle – ask your homework buddy to give you a mixture of letters (joined phoneme focus, vowels and consonants) and try to create as many words as you can using the letters provided.

Play a game of Hangman with someone at home.

Rainbow writing – choose a different colour to write each letter of a word, e.g. stew

Christmas Craft
Primary 3N have been having lots of fun making our Christmas crafts for the 2020 Onthank ‘virtual’ Christmas craft fayre. Each child has made a reindeer lolly and a personalised snow globe.
These are priced at £2. This price includes both the snowglobe and the reindeer that your child has made. They are limited edition with only one of each item available per child!
Payment of the £2 can be made through Parent Pay.

Good morning everyone, hope you’re all doing well!
Let’s have a bit of a catch up day today and you can go back over any of the activities of your choice from last week and this week. Maybe there has been something that you particularly enjoyed, or didn’t have time for, that you could go back to. Perhaps yesterday you didn’t manage to test out your ICT skills and post work that you’ve been busy with to your blog page, you could give it a try today : )
Remember that you can access your Bug Club to do some reading, practise your ow words from this week or ew words from last week with active spelling strategies of your choice, try out some of the maths games that I posted links for (scroll to the lower part of this page to find them) – the choice is yours!

Wednesday 11th November 2020 – Remembrance Day
Why do we have a two minute silence on Armistice (Remembrance) Day?
The first two-minutes silence was held on 11 November, 1919, exactly one year after the guns fell silent in the First World War.
On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, a promise of peace was made between the Allies (including Britain, France and the USA) and the German forces. This marked the end of the First World War.
At 11am this morning people all over the country will be having a two minute silence to remember the brave men and women who have lost their lives during wars.
If we were in school today, we would be having a two minute silence in the classroom. I am going to have a two minute silence at home at 11am instead. It would be lovely if you could join me by having a two minute silence at home too.
If you click on the link below, you will find a Cbeebies video clip called ‘Poppies’. It is two minutes long. If you like, you could watch it quietly during your two minute silence. It shows animals on the battlefields and the poppies that grew in the battlefields after the fighting stopped.

Literacy

You will be able to brush up on your capital letters skills, enjoy a story about friendship and do a little bit of writing about hobbies. I’m sure you have been busy working hard over the past week or so and I would love to see some of the things that you have been up to. Normally I would encourage you to bring your jotter to school with you, but we are probably best avoiding that for the time being and trying to stay as ‘Covid Safe’ as we can by limiting the amount of things that we take between school and home.
It would be great to get you all using your Glow blogs to upload work. I know that some of you managed to do this during lockdown and Mrs Saxelby was able to write little messages back to you. I’m hoping to try and do the same thing.
Mrs Kidd has made a couple of great ‘how to’ videos that I am going to share with you. The first will help you learn how to log in to Glow and the next video will show you how to post messages on your page.
Today could you watch the videos, then have a go at posting some pictures of your ‘home learning’ work to your blog page. If you found some pterodactyl (or general dinosaur) facts the other day, you could type these on to your blog page too and we could share them on the Interactive whiteboard when we are back in school.

Literacy
In class recently we have been learning about putting words into alphabetical order. Click on the link below for a BBC Bitesize lesson which will help you to practise your skills. There is a short video first of all to remind you what to do, followed by three activities to try.

This time click on the 2nd video, which is called ‘Using a Place Value chart’. Don’t worry when it mentions answering questions on a worksheet, just have a think about the questions you are asked as you watch the video as a reminder of work that we have done in class.

Now have a look at the worksheet below to see whether you can work out the values of the tens and units, and hundreds, tens and units using the place value charts. You can just say your answers out loud, or note down your answers in your jotter if you prefer.

Remembrance Day
Remembrance Day (Poppy Day) is on 11 November (tomorrow) and is also known as Armistice Day. It marks the day World War One ended, at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, in 1918. A two-minute silence is held at 11am on 11th November to remember the people who have died in wars.

If you fancy testing your Remembrance Day knowledge, have a go at reading the activity sheet attached below and try to fill in the missing words so that it makes sense. In England, ‘The Royal British Legion’ are the charity who run the poppy appeal each year. In Scotland, ‘Poppy Scotland’ is the charity that makes the poppies and fund raises through their poppy appeal. The money raised by ‘Poppy Scotland’ is used to support people in Scotland.

I hope you enjoyed meeting Plop, the fluffy, baby barn owl when you listened to the story yesterday.
The ‘setting’ for a story means where a story takes place. In the story ‘The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark’ , Plop lives with his mummy and daddy at the top of a very tall tree in a field. In Chapter one – Dark is Exciting, Plop experiences firework night.
Have a look at the activity below and have a go at drawing where Plop lives. Use firework night as the event that Plop experiences in your picture. You could listen to chapter one again so that the details are clear in your mind if you like.

Remembrance Sunday
This weekend, Sunday 8th November, marks Remembrance Sunday ahead of Remembrance Day (Poppy Day) on Wednesday 11th November next week.
Watch this video from ‘Poppy Scotland’ which will explain to you why we buy and wear poppies, and how they are made.
Why don’t you have a go at making a ‘Poppy’ to display in your window at home, a bit like we did with our rainbow art during ‘Lockdown’.

Bonfire Night is really exciting, in fact it is one of my favourite nights of the year. I love getting wrapped up cosy and warm, going out in the dark and watching a firework display. I also hope that you are feeling confident and able to log in to your Bug Club account. When you are learning at home it might help you to have a timetable that is a little bit like the one we follow in school, so that you can space out a variety of learning with regular breaks in between.
