Power Down Campaign
The aim of Power Down is to build a strong community of energy saving champions across our East Ayrshire centres, schools, homes and communities. Newmilns Primary School are participating in this years campaign as we aim to reduce our overall energy output. We will complete different challenges each month to try and achieve our very own ‘Windy’ the windmill certificate.
October
We have achieved our base tower! As part of Newmilns’ Power Down challenge this month, we have created our Eco Police who have been working diligently ensuring all classroom lights have been turned off at break and lunch. We have been keeping track of repeat offenders in our red folder!
November
Power Down November challenge – we took part in the water waste week. Our Eco committee discussed the water cycle, the concern over water wastage and ways in which we could reduce water waste.
We created posters giving ideas on how we can save water. Theses were place in every classroom and water dispenser within the school.
Here are some of our posters and of course of Base Tower certificate.
December
For our December challenge our Eco group were tasked with researching and presenting a renewable energy source to the group. The PowerPoints will be refined so the kids can present their research at a whole school assembly. Some excellent Powerpoints that will be shared next month as part of January’s challenge!
Another part of Windy completed!
January
Our eco group decided that each class needed their own checklist to make sure every class does their bit to reduce the school’s overall energy output.
Here are a few,
We have been awarded our Top Tower Certificate.
February
The Eco group have presented their renewable energy research at a whole school assembly. An enormous well done to all P7s, who presented their topic fantastically.
We have now been awarded our Blade portion of Windy.
March
Our eco group decided to have an afternoon of no power. We decided beforehand that we would use the afternoon to go outside and create bug hotels in our nature park behind the school to increase biodiversity. I’ve attached pictures of our superbly named hotels the ‘Bug Khalifa’, ‘Premier Inn(sect)’ and ‘Bugginham Palace’. Pictures of which can be seen in the ‘natural environment page’.
We now have Blade 2 of Windy!
April
For this month’s challenge we promoted school wide participation in the climate poster competition. Pictures to follow…
We now have our Blade 3 certificate.
Windy’s Day out at Newmilns
