This week in the ECC we have focused on STEM Science week, exploring the topic of Space. This was introduced by reading stories, using technology to enhance our knowledge and the children also created their own planets/solar system. The children also had the opportunity to create moon sand and explore this sensory experience.

O u t d o o r s –

Continuing to explore challenge whilst in the construction area, working as part of team throughout. Also exploring different building types and the different features of a building.

The children have further developed their prediction skills through retelling of the story, the Gruffalo, further enhancement of knowledge and literacy skills.

From the children’s interest in exploring in the water, the children extended their own learning by creating potions and colour mixing throughout.

The children have continued to explore vehicles, using the larger building materials to create their own ramp, problem solving and team work throughout. They then used the larger vehicles to test out the ramp, taking turns to do so. The children then extended their own learning by measuring how far the vehicles travelled.

Our Health and Wellbeing champion delivered ‘Oh Lila’. This is a learning resource which aims to help children develop social skills and understand that asking for help is a positive behaviour. The story expresses the importance of asking for help if you feel worried, scared or have a problem. In the story Lila experiences a range of emotions including feeling happy, safe, worried, scared, lonely & angry and together we discussed who to speak to for help if we ever experience any of these emotions. As the children will soon be visiting the woods and taking part in fresh air Friday, we identified what dangers we may come across and the importance of keeping safe when in the community. We discussed the importance of having rules and expectations in place to help keep us safe and explored why it is important to follow them.

This week in the ECC the children participated in a baking experience, making their own Oaty biscuits in which they were able to enjoy at snack. This experience involved using a variety of ingredients, the children had the opportunity to measure ingredients, taking turns to mix and using their senses of smell and touch throughout. Also discussions took place around keeping safe near an oven.

This week in the creative area the children have been creating their own patterns in the playdough. This was then extended into printing their own patterns using paint and natural materials. Most children have been interested in colour mixing with the paints, mixing primary colours to determine what colour they will make. The children shown good sharing and turn taking throughout.

O u t d o o r s –

This week in the outdoor following from children’s interests the children have been exploring sea life. Researching using fact books to fact find the different species in the sea and what features are associated with the sea- shells, stones, the coral reef.

“The ocean is very delicate and the coral reef sometimes disappear”

“Is there water inside the shell I can hear the sea”

The children then looked at the different patterns on a sea shell and how they feel to touch them, using descriptive words throughout. Some children created their own beach in the outdoor area.

We have a child in the ECC and their sibling in the primary school who have both finished their treatment for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia and to celebrate this amazing milestones, Mauchline PS and ECC held a ‘Bell’ party to commemorate them finishing treatment and ringing the bell. We are super proud of the resilience and bravery they have shown. September is Go Gold for childhood cancer awareness month, and Leukaemia awareness is Orange 🎗️🧡💛Everyone was invited to wear these colours to support and celebrate this achievement. The full school were involved in a guard of honour to commemorate the amazing achievement of both girls. Both the ECC and P3 enjoyed a party afterwards to celebrate.

The ECC are celebrating a great inspection from Care Inspectorate.

Welcome everyone to Mauchline ECC blog. We use the blog to show case weekly learning within the ECC. The blog has also been updated with photographs of the learning environment, policies and procedures and our new school/ECC improvement plan.

The children have been working as part of a team to construct their own designs and were able to utilise their problem solving and imaginative skills throughout. Their designs were amazing!

This week in the creative area the children have been making their own world cup flags using a variety of different materials. The children were discussing the different countries, the culture behind the different countries and the different patterns they see in the flags.

During our STEM session this week the children revisited electricity and were able to discuss what is safe and unsafe. They were identifying signs within the school where the use of electricity was evident. The children then created their own posters to put around the school to raise awareness of keeping safe whist using electricity.

Outdoors this week the children have been working as a team to construct their own obstacle courses as part of physical play. Some children were also able to use their imagination and work as a team to build robot men using a variety of loose parts materials. The children were also observed exploring in the mud kitchen using herbs and spices.

I n d o o r s –

Indoors this week the children began exploring families. Recognising different types of families and different people within a family. They began looking at the concept of looking after a baby – bathing them, changing and feeding. The children also displayed great turn taking and sharing skills with the different baby resources. The children explored the small world space by creating their own houses. The children listened to stories surrounding families and shared their own experiences.

Huge thank you to the parent council for hosting a world cup fun day today, everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.

All children enjoyed getting into the football spirit with dancing and singing throughout the day. They even enjoyed a world cup themed lunch too.

All children created their own Scotland themed empire biscuit today to enjoy as a social situation at snack.

This week we have expanded our Burns farm shop into a cafe, where the children continued to explore ‘Farm to Fork’ and the concept of money whilst role playing. The children also enjoyed exploring small world resources, creating their own farm yards and jungle habitats. To further expand on the interest in letters, the children spent time in small groups looking at initial sounds in their name and other familiar words. Following from the children’s interests of role playing families and building houses for families, we will begin to look at families in more depth next week.

O u t d o o r s –

Outdoors this week there was lots of talk around football. We extended children’s learning by exploring how to pick a team, chose a goalkeeper then play with a half time, switching sides. To keep things platonic we had Scotland 1 and Scotland 2. Children used tally marks to keep score and lots of celebrations were had at the end with the winning team. We listened to the music used to celebrate Scotland going to the World Cup and used iPad to explore what teams Scotland will play.

This week in the ECC the children have continued to explore in our farm shop, creating price lists for all the items, exploring coins to buy the items and amount to the numeral. The children then transferred the items they bought in the farm shop to the home corner and cooked the items in the home corner like it was their own home. The children were able to use their imaginative skills throughout and applying their real life experiences to their play.

O u t d o o r s –

This week in the outdoor area the children in exploring bugs, using books and ICT to fact find around bugs/insects, specially ones we find in our garden. The children supported staff to revamp our bug house and collected natural materials from our garden to enhance the structure of our bug house. The children used resources such as magnifying glasses and binoculars to search and investigate insects and bugs within the environment.

F i r e   P i t   E x p e r i e n c e –

Thanks to everyone who attended the fire pit experience today. This experience provided the children with an opportunity to build upon their safety skills and enabling them to understand the safety rules whilst being at a fire. It was also a great socialising experience for the children and their parents/carers and the children were also able to reflect on their experience at the woods.

This week due to the continued interest in animals particularly farm animals, we created a farm shop which the children have enjoyed exploring in. Some children have been able to take on the role of a sales assistant and exploring the concept of money. We will continue to explore this next week to deepen children’s knowledge.
