Working in Wellies Careers Event

Welcome to the virtual ‘Working in Wellies’ Careers Event!

This is a supporting resource following on from the successful ‘Women in Wellies’ event held by LOST  in partnership with Dumfries House and RHET (Royal Highland Educational Trust) and the subsequent ‘How To’ toolkit resource.  The event and toolkit are funded and supported by Education Scotland’s Enhancing Professional Learning in STEM Grants Programme through the Scottish Government STEM Education and training Strategy.

You can find out more about the initial Women in Wellies event and it’s impact here:

Background to the event

In 2017, the Scottish Government released the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education and Training Strategy for Scotland. This document detailed an aspiration for Scotland to be at the forefront of the scientific and technological
advancements of the future.

The purpose of the ‘Working in Wellies’ initiative therefore is to support teachers to encourage secondary pupils to consider STEM and rural subjects and careers, and to inspire young people to think creatively and ambitiously about their future.

As the aim of the event is to support teachers and to develop their professional knowledge, we ask that any teachers who engage with the event with their class complete these surveys, before and after.

Online Event

Our online event aims to engage and connect teachers and students with professionals working across a variety of STEM and rural sectors.  Through a structured lesson plan and by using our suite of resources including an interactive pupil passport, teachers can support pupils to explore the different roles and career pathways, consider how these could apply to their lives and ambitions and begin to make informed choices about their future.

We believe that there not a ‘one size fits all’ approach to transitions and destinations after school, and so we have tried to share experiences from people working across a range of areas and who have progressed through various pathways to get there.

How to take part

The is a virtual event, hosted on our website.  It is not a live ‘one day only event’ so therefore it can be used by people working in schools at any time, anywhere in the country.

Teachers and their classes can engage with the event through following our lesson plan which will guide you through each step.

Pupils use the Pupil Passport to find links to videos, to reflect on their learning and to link what they have found out to their future transitions and destinations.

You might also find it useful if pupils complete the pre and post event surveys which can be completed online or downloaded as PDFs here:
