| Today we share another wonderful Literacy Out of the Box resource with you all. Woo in the Wild Woods is a children’s story written by local author Greta Yorke and we have uploaded a variety of lessons and activities to go along with it. One lesson encourages learners to think about and thank someone who has been kind to them or helped them. This could be particularly important during the current climate. The lesson is aimed at first level learners, however, it could be quite easily differentiated across the levels. The lesson can be found here:

Snail Racing
Are you missing sports – both doing and watching? Lorna is! In this video, she has encouraged three snails to race and has timed them to see how long it takes them to travel 10cm. It might not be as fast paced as the sport you are used to watching…but it certainly nail biting! Which snail do you think will win? Can you work out their strategy? This activity links nicely into exploration of numeracy and maths concepts such as estimation, measure and speed, distance and time. Making a Rocket
We have been busy uploading resources across all curricular areas to our website. Here, we share some science activities, which, although suitable for first level learners, they can of course be differentiated to suit other pupils working at different levels.

Tree Poetry
Trees are wonderful but, often we don’t fully take them in. This video and accompanying activity encourages children to engage with trees, to explore them using their senses and describe them, with Aly demonstrating how they can create their own poem. Bismark Battleships
We all remember playing the game of battleships when we were younger, but this is a brilliant activity to scale up and take outdoors to practice coordinates and put learning into context.
This lesson was created as part of a Social Studies topic on World War 2, however you can of course just use the grid to learn about coordinates. The game can be played individually or with a family member and allows children to physically move around to explore the concept.

Virtual Environment Fair 31.5.20
Dumfries and Galloway OWL Group are holding a Virtual Environment Fair is on the Sunday, 31st May 11am to 4pm
Experienced practitioners share their knowledge and enthusiasm. A great opportunity to find out how we can use our wonderful outdoor spaces (small and large, near and far!) to support outdoor learning. You can drop in and out over the course of the day and collect ideas to use in your own settings.
